APM 2.9 Loiter/Alt Hold Vibration Dampening Solution

I've been getting a few PM's about this moongel stuff, figured I'd make a new thread about it since it's bound to get lost in the main AC 2.9 thread.

In any case, the solution to all my problems was Moon Gel.  It's available in just about all local music stores which was awesome for me convenience wise, didn't really want to wait for something to ship from ebay.  Another alternative is Wincent Tone Gel which SHOULD work just as well if the music store carries that instead.

Anyway, I threw together a quad from leftover parts I had laying around just so I can see what APM can do before I decided if I wanted to switch over to it on my hexa.  Basically an old, busted Xaircraft frame, pretty banged up motors that have seen plenty of direct pavement hits and some terrible props from years ago.  Needless to say, it was a vibration machine and 2.9.1 was absolutely terrible on it in alt hold/loiter due to massive vibrations.  I tried the rubber orings, and the earplugs first.  Earplugs worked decently but I still couldn't make it behave well at 20+.  Enter, Moon Gel.

Ended up stacking two pieces on each corner of my apm with super thin 3m sticky tape on top and bottom and my chopper started flying like a dream.  I had to use 5hz before and alt hold/loiter were completely unusable,  With earplugs I was able to get it behaving somewhat alright@10hz, but it still left a lot to be desired.  After the moongel it was perfectly stable at 20/42 and all my vibration issues went away.

I think I paid $6.40 for 4 pretty big pieces, I only ended up using maybe half of one strip.  It's super cheap, ebay also has plenty but the local convenience with the music store was awesome

After the initial tests I just took it all apart and glued the moongel to the apm, then glued that to the frame.  The double sided sticky tape worked fine in my brief testing, but I just wanted to make sure it wouldn't give.

Whichever way you decide to put it on just make sure you superglue the double stacks together in the middle, moongel on moongel direct is a terrible idea without superglue in the middle of it.

Even put some on my gopromount of my old knockoff dji f450 frame [vibe machine] and it worked wonders on the jello.

To be honest, I'm about to dump my WKM while it still has some value and get a PX4 or 2.5 for the heavy hexa, I'm THAT impressed with the alt hold/loiter/waypoints/performance/cost of Arducopter now that its flying my ghetto bird like a dream.  I'm sure 2.9.2 will be absolutely fantastic with more inertial nav, I just fear a lot of people will be fighting vibrations and giving up before getting a chance to really see what it can do.

Here's a picture of the stuff.  The square stack at the end is how much I used on each corner.  Double stacked, glued together in the middle.

As for the progression, here's some videos:

Earplugs@5hz [maybe 10, I can't remember], you can still see how badly it twitches while trying to maintain position.

Moongel, just about stock settings, only changed a couple of things:

Moongel after some more fine tuning@42hz, absolutely 0 discernable twitch.

  • I used 1 whole piece of moongel as it comes out of the container(contains4.). I glued both sides to 3m double sided tape so basically made a moongel sandwich. I placed it top center on my f450 frame and it absorbs a lot I'm still exceeding my AccelZ recommended limits. Do you think because I used the entire piece it have enough contact with the frame to transfer a lot of vibration still?

Ill admit I'm on unbalanced gemfan props but i would assume that should cause that much of an issue?
  • moongel works great! It basically solved the wild gyration problem with my f450 frame. But I cannot get my quad behave as well as yours. In loiter mode, it wobbles in light wind, and it drifts up and down about 2 ft at 6 ft height and about 5 ft laterally.

  • Hello Ben, I've been working out with guided mode too, can seem to figure out why if I switch to guided it banks sideways and forward then won't stay up in the same spot. But I do get e very solid loiter, specially with the latest firmware. Very solid even in low altitude

  • What kind of glue have you used to glue the pads to the frame resp. apm?

    CA?

    regards

  • hi everybodyyyy. ...nice post  BenH .

I will be trying out the moongel as soon as i can get some .

I need to have a good weather day to do a test on my setup now and record the logs

to see if my problem is vibration .

Then hopefully i will try out your moongel and see if logs change .

fingers crossed i will get result that mirror your results .

    cheers darren

  • Quick little Click and Go test..

  • How the APM was mounted, one double stack per corner.

  • Here's the PID's3692646112?profile=original

Also, THR_MID under advanced param's is set to 450 I believe.

    Setup is as follows:

    Beatup Xaircraft V2 frame

    950kv Xaircraft Motors

    Terrible multistar HK 10amp esc's
    Xaircraft props

The APM is in a DIYD 2.5 case with no extra weight added.

Hey stop hitting that drone or I'm going to report you to the ethical treatment of drones society. LOL
