Carbon frame: size of tubes

Hi

My actual hexacopter has got a weight of 2.2kg with accu and I want to reduce the weight but keeping the same stability (in future i want to carry another 900gramm, that is a camera and the camera mount):

At the moment the aluminium tubes have 15x15mm. the distance between 2 neighbour motors is 32cm.

I plan to replace the aluminium tubes by

round 14mm carbon with 1mm thickness from hobby king. (7$ for 740mm)

OR:

proffesional 18mm (1mm thickness) pullwinded carbin tubes. (20€ for 1000mm)

will there be enough weight saving?

Are the diamters ok to be stable enough?

thank you and regards

  • Hi,

Using carbon fiber is more expensive but they are lighter and stronger, from my experience in my last build its a big difference between CF and Alu, here its an example.

I have some 15x15 1mm thickness aluminum profiles 1000mm long, and 13mm Wrapped Carbon Fiber tube 1.35mm thickness (very strong) 1000mm long, you might think that by the wall thickness the CF tube is heavy, well here are the results:

    Aluminum Profile - 144gr
    CF Tube - 78gr

As you can see much lighter, almost half the weight and they are really strong, so instead of the aluminum profiles I used them in my custom quad frame and saved 66gr

    Cheers!
