Drone coding competition for kids

Hey forum folks, I need your help

 

Disclaimer:  I know little to nothing about drones, and am hoping to crowdsource my learning to speed up the process, my husban is in the mail currently as I'd like to start my learning there. But here's the pipe dream.

 

In short:  I'd like to set up an obstacle course in a gym/field for kids to use a block based coding program like tynker to make the drone fly and complete the course.  This seems to be able to be done using a Parrot AR mini drone and the ios/android tynker app.  I'd like to alter this idea into students building there on simple drone out of lego, and the motors like flybrix (there kit is $189, and not programmable, as far as I know).

 

I'm wondering what components I'd need to buy for the kids, to make sure I can do this.  OR am I completely out to lunch in thinking my grade 6-8s can do it.  The tynker program is designed for kids.

 

 

Since I'm doing this out of my pocket, I need to keep the costs as low as possible.  Hoping to get some kids engaged in learning.

    Sounds like a really nice idea. It is more or less a drill for coding for kids. I want to ask did you ever get around to doing this?

    I am not exactly planning something for a lot of kids, but just mine so money might not exactly be a barrier here.

    Any suggestions?
