help me spec my skywalker

Ive decided to move ahead and purchase a skywalker.  By the way, I think I saw somewhere a "version 5" with a reinforcement rod for the wings, versus rubber bands... any opinions on this?

To keep things simple,my intention was (is?) to purchase the skywalker and all associated parts for it frrom one location (hobby king?)

I want to build it with plenty of power, so I can do FPV type video downlinks.  First I want to build it,and learn to fly it.  then, I want to put a hero or hero2 (or a different?) camera on it, and see what she can do.

I really want to get good with it.   I'm not looking for an acrobat platform, rather something I can fly slow and low, so I can get high quality video/still images with it.

Need advice on the motor, the lipo battery to use with it, the radio (4 channel?  5? 6?) the reciever, and what video transmitter is suggested to use for a clear signal (that won't interfere with flying).

I don't plan on this vehicle being autonomous, but rather max out at between 200 and 300 yards away from 'ground control.'  Yes, I expect/plan on maintaining line of sight.

I want to overbuild the motor and battery so I can increase payload andf flying time.

Ok, well who reccommends what and why?

For good combinations, try this thread:

The largest discussion on the Skywalker airframe, and now the new 1900mm wing, is found on http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1223595&page=865, but there are 13 000+ posts, but searching usually helps me out.

My opinion, 3S at ~1000kv is best for the Skywalker, especially for range. You should be able to cruise at 6-6.5 A.

  • Hi.

We talked on the phone once.  I was just friending some people and I saw your blog post.

    1) Sky walker is an excellent choice for a machine.

    Requires:
    Your Own 4 Channel TX/RX
28mm~35mm 850~1300kv Brushless Outrunner Motor (3s~4s depending on flying weight)
    30A~45A ESC w/BEC
2200mAh~5000mAh 3s (or 4s if loaded with FPV equipment)
    4 x 9g servo
    9x6 Prop

I would just surf ... www.rcgroups.com or google for "skywalker build" to get ideas.  That's what I normally do.  Basically you want a low kV motor, big prop, and a high capacity 4000mAh 20C 4S LiPo.  You also want to make sure that if your going to be using 4S you get something called a battery eliminator circuit to protect your electronics.  As for transmitter receiver you can away with a cheap 50$ system, but most people favor FUTABA with FAAST on 2.4 Ghz.  For the video just don't use 2.4Ghz.

There are several options like 900Mhz, 1.28Ghz, and 5.8Ghz look at readymaderc.com they have some cool systems that are setup.
