Police Drone

Hi,

I am searching a low cost solution for monitoring my house for anti-thief. (police drone)

I think we need an infrared camera.

Thermal camera seems an expensive one, but maybe we could add it.

Which drone do you recommend me to buy?

Regards

  • From your comments you want:

    • Low cost solution
    • Search for robbers on the roof during their escape
    • Monitor the whole street from the sky when the alarm is activated
    • Giving police directions where the robbers are

    Consider lower tech type solution:

    • sensors on the roof/s (with neighbors permission) as trigger points/switches to activate pre-programmed action
    • send the Geo tag of each sensor when activated

    Example:

    • sensor 1 activated on house 1
    • send email/SMS to a known/agreed Police contact with the address for house 1
    • drone then deploy on pre-programmed flight path 1 to observe/film (stream live video or store on-board)
    • for night filming; pack the roof/s with hidden infrared lights to illuminate or actual security lights on the roof triggered by movement. Alternatively you could attach infrared lights to the drone for night filming (need to be lightweight)

    Others to consider:

    • drone flying a pre-programmed path with on-board RF tag to switch on/off cameras in fixed locations
    • create drone guard dog (crime prevention) e.g. sensor triggered (anywhere on the house), drone goes up in the air x feet and activates loud speaker “Police notified of security breach and on route” and films.
    • camera on a wire that runs between the roof buildings when triggered by the sensors

Hopefully you now have a few more ideas to run with and the next challenge is locating the required kit/software/drone charging point…and don’t get your drone stolen!

    All the best FlightBots!

  • BTW an iphone based bolometer(thermal cam) is going on sale from FLIR in august for 350.00 so the bolometer itself has come way down in cost and size..

  • hah, a pack of pitbulls/dobermans/rottweilers will work far better :) that being said you need charging pad for your multicopter

such as http://skysense.de/ or a homebuilt equivalent.

I would also look at spraying the thieves with smartwater from above, UV dye or skunkshot gel(find them by smell) or simply use a bottle of immensely stinky predator lure, spray it dont just drop the bottle on the thieve's heads!! :)

  • ...there is the expensive option of getting a FLIR FPV camera, but even with IR, if you can get enough light, your gonna have to stand out in your yard while the bad guy is out there too and probably armed.  If any moonlight is out he will see where it took off from and landed so he may come after you.

    Stay safe!

  • You guys are so negative about it!  If he is convinced that; that is the best solution, then let him have it!

I recomend something easy to fly, I think the DJI Phantom (with some sort of FPV, and maybe a GoPro) is your best solution. Because it is "plug and play" and ready to fly...

Now, for infrared camera, I am pretty sure those are extremely expensive, so you can forget about it!   Maybe attach a powerful spot light to the drone?

  • Or save the money to move out of the neighborhood?

  • I will manipulate the drone. My alarm is not internal on my house, also i have alarm on my pool etc.

So, if my outside alarm is triggered i want to send the drone to search and also to give police directions where the thiefs are.

  • What do you plan to do once you find them? Someone needs to be flying the unit. I am assuming you would not be home to operate the unit since your home alarm was set.

  • I also think it is not very practical to use the drone. I don't think you can launch it quickly enough.

It takes a minute to connect your battery, turn on your transmitter, get your FPV gear on, let the copter find GPS lock, ect. It would be hard to automate this and make it faster.

  • Thanks flightbot for your suggestions, but actually i have my alarm and monitoring cameras.

What i need is a way to search for thiefs on the roof during their escape from house. As my street have many houses and they could hide in any of them.

    A sort of police drone.
