Setting-up a new APM

Having decided to give APM a try as opposed to my usual MK or KK Fight control system. I thought it would be a good idea to purchase a ready made code loaded and tested APM from udrones. OK, so when I had it nicely installed in one of my quad models, I tested the motor directions with the receiver input before doing the config. I was a little surprised to find that it was acting like a fixed wing set-up i.e. the throttle was only activating the the front motor and the rudder, aileron and elevator inputs were activating the other motors individually. So I decided to run the configurator and see what was going on. I then discovered that although it would connect no data was flowing. Having spent hours trying this and that. I decided to reload the NG code with the IDE, remembering to make the Mag. changes to the code. That all went smoothly. and the configurator is now reading data. I see V1.54 which seems to be correct, however it is still acting like a fixed wing and not reading motor data.  I also noted that the +or X dip switch had no effect. What am I doing wrong here?
