Solar Zephyr

Hello everyone,

So I suppose everybody has seen heard or read about the solar zephyr if not here's the link http://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/aviation/diy-flying/solar-plane-zephyr-uav-record

This is amazing work and it's most probably illegal to launch one of these privately, would it be possible to construct something like that sure the component's are expensive but the frame itself looks quite simple.

Again, IF you have the $ and can build a bird that is under the 100lb restriction then you can fly it RC. Now I have no idea and cannot comment on the future restrictions but as it’s currently sits you can fly RC up to 100lbs with a waiver.

A great example of how large we are allowed would be http://wn.com/Mac_Hodges_B-29_UPDATE!

  • I'm going on what Chris said but this is still under the board for RC the UAV part that where the problem comes in.
  • Johann,

Probably so, but he wants to explore the idea so here we are.....

Its not so far fetched. I am sure there are many ideas on here that were way out there in the beginning.

I personally do not have time for such a project, but I am willing to give my input.

  • Johann I know the zephyr is some extreme work but if possible this will be a huge advancement just imagine the Open Source Solar UAV Zephyr.

It used the power that is generated by real ale and pies for design, oh and QinetiQs space flight devision for materials.

  • Its under the AMA weight. IF flown RC you would be fine with a waver. Autonomous is another story. Would be a neat project under RC stabilized flight although it will probably not need much......

Its defiantly doable but going to cost you a lot of time and $. Might want a few pals give you a hand! =)
