Sonar APM

Hi guys,

I am trying to do autonomous flight using my APM 2.5 and Mission Planner. I am using a sonar for measuring the height of the Quad for landing and takeoff purposes. However, as the quad takes off the heights being shown in the Mission Planner's home screen increase in magnitude but with a negative sign. Due to this the quad keeps throttling upwards without stop ( I was using a rope as a fail-safe here =D ). This is despite the fact that the sonar readings obtained in the terminal are reasonably accurate.

Could anyone please provide some suggestions in this regard?

  • Is the sonar seeing the rope and giving a false reading - thinking it's still on the ground, so then gives more throttle... repeat...?

    • no that is unlikely, because:

      1. the rope is more of a plastic string - it is very thin

      2. they are on opposite arms

moreover, this happens without any rope being attached
