ok when running a test on sonar what kind of numbers should i see my sonar semms to only change from 130cm to 180cm thats just moving the sonar up and down in my hand is this what i should be seeing thanks for any info Tom

Depends on sonar naturally. When we are testing those sonars on Assembled ArduCopter kits and our own kits at jDrones, usually minimums are around 25-28 cm due that's the minimum distance what Maxbotix sonars can measure and max distance is up the to sonar it self.
But if you see only 130-180cm there might be something wrong, have you tested with any sonar example test programs to see if your sonar works ok?

best test is to point it to the ceiling, clear of any big objects.
when you block its range too near, it will sometime detect small distance but sometimes go crazy a bit...
