Sonar XL-Maxsonar compatibility

I have an XL-Maxsonar EZ4 that was the recommended sonar for Ardupirates.

Arducopters recommended sonar is the XL-Maxsonar EZ0.

I know the beam pattern is different between the EZ0 & EZ4 but is that all?

If I pick " XL-Maxsonar EZ0 " in the mission planner,  will my EZ4 work properly?

Is anyone out there using the EZ4, if so how does it compare with the others?.

  • I have used EZ4 with good results.  Always test sonar using .49 firmware - when you have your sonar mounted and filtered right it will be spot on in this version. I use .49 to test hardware, later code has probs.

If you view the following link, you will see a noise test that we conducted with our sensors and charts of what the results were.

The biggest difference between the EZ4 and the EZ0 is not just the beam pattern, but the EZ4 is less sensitive then the EZ0 in terms of object detection.  The EZ4 will also reject acoustic noise a little better then the EZ0 because of the narrow beam pattern.  With the EZ0's beam pattern being much wider then the EZ4's, it is more susceptible to outside interference.  If objects of detectable size fall in the EZ0's beam pattern, even if it is off to axis, the EZ0 may range to that target instead of the target your looking to range too.  If you replaced the EZ0 with the EZ4 and didn't move the target that was off axis the EZ4 has a less likely chance of detecting that object.
