Sony Camera Gimbal

Greetings all,

I'm about to pull the trigger on either the 3DR Iris+ or the X-8+.  I'd like to get a Sony Rx100 iii up in the air.  I want to make sure I get the right gimbal before I get the drone.  I know that the Iris+ doesn't have the payload to support the camera.  My question is:  Is there a recommended gimbal to use for the X-8+ that I can get my sony Rx 100 iii up?  If not, is there some way to modify the existing tarot 2d gimbal?

Any insight is appreciated!

Thanks

  • simple way out, you can get an NEX Gimbal from RCtimer with an Alex Mos board for around $300.00 - it works really well. especially for the cost.

    • Sorry if I'm asking a question on the wrong forum.

I would like to know if Sony a6000 has a Video Out Port to connect  to a OSD for Telemerty readings.

      Like a GoPro has.

  • Thanks for all the comments.  Based on what I have read, it would be better to get the X-8+ for the sole reason that it allows me to use better cameras for  photography.  Since I am committed to making this investment, I would rather have a drone that can carry a bigger payload for future missions.  Im I wrong?  Im assuming that the gimbal option mentioned above still gives me the ability to FPV and follow me.

It would be cool to see the Sony Rx100iii on the Iris +.

    • I think you are correct. Go for the x-8+.

I'm a bit jealous because I just got the Iris+ and I really want to try an RX100iii on it.
I went with the Iris+ because I am relatively inexperienced and I felt like the x-8 was probably too much for me. I still think that's the right call. Maybe in 6 months or a year I'll look at the X-8 again. I just need to be patient.

As for FPV and follow me, you will be able to do all of that.

Personally I would recommend contacting Adam Andrews at Black ops drones. (http://www.aeroworksproductions.com/) That's where I got my Iris+. He set it up with FPV, better antennas, and pre tested/configured it for me. The customer service has been awesome. I've called him from the field and he's helped me resolve issues on the spot. Email is great, but to be able to pick up the phone and get help is super great. I'm sure there are other great dealers out there, but I highly recommend him.
  • Still, it would be great if there were a way to shed weight elsewhere on the Iris+ to allow for an Rx100iii with at least a 2 axis gimbal. If anyone can figure out how to do that, it would be amazingly great.

I am agree this view. Crazy and interesting.

  • Are you sure the Iris+ can't handle the Sony RX 100 version 3?

I ask because I've seen one mounted on a Phantom Vision+ using mounts from http://droneexpert.nl
(browse their products section). I assume the Iris+ Could handle one too.

I'd assumed you wanted to use a gimbal, which would probably add too much weight and depth, but if you just want to hard mount it as they did with the Phantom I'm sure that would work.

      • ahh. Good point.

An rx 100 iii is 290 grams (with battery and memory stick).
Assuming the Iris+ can handle 1 pound, that leaves 163 grams for gimbal, FPV system, etc.

The DYS or Hobbypower 3-axis gimbals are easy to mount on the X8 and can handle bigger cameras like the Sony.
