Turnigy 9XR + Frsky X8R + PIxhawk + ??

As I understand the X8R "should" connect fine with the PixHawk.

The question is what FrSky Tx should I get for the Turnigy 9XR to make it all work? Will the 9XR work with the FrSky components so they all talk to each other?

If not in this forum, where would be a good place to get the information? My Y6 kit is coming this week and I've got everything except the Tx and Rx.

I'm an old timer RC flier so this is all new to me, but am learning. I don't mind tinkering and troubleshooting, but OTOH want to get up and flying in a reasonable time.

Thanks much.

  • Hi DG. I have a Taranis and am using an X8R with a Pixhawk. The X8R connects just fine to the Pixhawk, no issues. Since the Pixhawk can recognize both SBUS and PPM, I'm utilizing SBUS from the X8R to the Pixhawk for all of the channels. Very simple with just one cable.

That being said, getting all of your settings right in the Turnigy, probably much like the Taranis, can take some time. They're not quite as user friendly as say a Futaba or Spektrum. I found several videos on Youtube to be very very helpful in that area for setting up all the custom switches and mixes and so forth.

The alternative to that would be to find a pre-made model file for your Turnigy to simply load all of the settings someone else already is using. You'd have to match the flight controllers and everything, but it sometimes can save a lot of time. I think rcsettings.com can sometimes have what you're looking for. But proceed with caution if you go that route. Usually best to learn all of the settings by entering in them yourself.

And then of course you need a module for the Turnigy to talk to the X8R. Just the regular old FrSky JR (DJT) module should be fine. Binding is pretty easy. Then it's a matter of does the Turnigy get telemetry data from the X8R, and that I don't know. I mostly fly FPV so all of that data I need is in my HUD.

    Hope that helps!

    • I actually now have a Taranis and X6R rx (local startup shop had 5 to sell....lucky to find it) to use with the PixHawk. I believe it is similar to the X8R??

I don't mind digging into the Taranis to set it up, but it would be nice to have a bit of PnP installed; have been reading various sources on getting things right.

The Turnigy 9XR DJT/D8R-XP is now my son's for building his 450 quadcopter. The 9XR requires hardware mods to get the telemetry to work. The new 9XR Pro comes ready for telemetry IIRC, and it's a good price but I'm not willing to wait. They are probably already on backorder at HobbyKing anyway. I've learned not to expect fast delivery from HK even when ordering from the U.S. warehouse delivered to a U.S. address. 5+ days just for processing after payment is ridiculous IMO.

Anyway, thanks for replying, it was helpful. I wish there was a one-stop location for doing all this.
