Is it possible to mount 8 motors on a 3DR frame? This would be 2 per arm, 1 pushing and 1 pulling. Could this be a realistic upgrade for increased payload and/or motor redundancy? I realize the power board would have to be replaced as well, is there anything else that would have to be modified?

Yes you can modify it to fit with little work. I don't remember doing much when I did it. You already mentioned the pdb. For the bottom motors, you want to mount them to the fiberglass plate first and the top motor like you normally would through the aluminum boom, then join them together using the spacers and screws. Though, I'd recommend a reinforced backing for the bottom motors as I do not trust the fiberglass plates for the torque. Practice good cable management.
havent tried it, i suspect the frame would be sturdy to handle another 4 motors on it ( that is my intial impression - i have a 3dr). Would be curious to know how it goes
