Which Outdoor Ultrasonic Sensor to Use with APM 2.5?

I recently completed the build of my amphibious quad and would like to add a sonar to it.  I see there are a number of outdoor sensors available from Maxbotix (http://maxbotix.com/Ultrasonic_Sensors/MB7383.htm) but I'm not sure which ones are compatible with APM 2.5, since none of them are listed in the dropdown menu of the Sonar Config page in Mission Planner.  Can anyone tell me which sensor(s) would work well and what the proper APM config would be?

  • Hello, this is Tom Bonar from MaxBotix Inc.

    I saw your forum post and I would like to lend some assistance.  The MB7383 can use the same code as the XL-MaxSonar-EZ0 in your APM2.5 coding.  The reason for this is the Analog Voltage output has a resolution of 10mm per bit.  So if you are reading the sensor with a 10bit ADC, 1 bit is equal to 1cm, like the MB1200 that is selectable with the APM2.5 coding software.  

    If you are reading the analog voltage and need to convert the mV output the scaling is (Vcc/1024)=mV per 10mm.

    Please be aware that the MB7383 is not designed for underwater use.  If you wish to use the sensor underwater, I would recommend checking out this video that one of our end users made regarding this topic.  http://www.designspark.com/blog/coconut-pi-individual-components-de....  I stated, we do not support or warranty underwater applications.  

    Our MaxSonar-WR sensors IP67 rating is meant to show that it can handle rugged environments.
