I am trying to avoid confusion with the older post:
From this link but there is no mention of the initial conditions i.e. the 4-wire power cable and CLI switch:
http://code.google.com/p/arducopter/wiki/AC2_ESC
Optional: In-field ESC calibration
This method works once you have all the ESCs connected to the power distribution board and have connected all your RC cables as instructed earlier in the manual.
Safety first - Remove props!
- Disconnect USB
- Put the throttle high and connect the Lipo to power the APM
- When the APM boots the lights will cycle
- disconnect the Lipo and reconnect it. High PWM will be sent to the ESCs triggering calibration
- Drop your throttle stick to the lowest position. You should hear confirmation/arming beeps. Move the throttle to confirm all ESCs are armed and working in sync.
- Unplug the battery. Your ESCs are now calibrated. No further action is required.
SHOULD I CONNECT THE 4-WIRE power cable to the RC PINS?
IN WHICH MODE SHOULD THE CLI SWITCH BE?: http://code.google.com/p/arducopter/wiki/AC2CLI

This method works great for me. It should work 100 % of the time with HK style programmable ESCs.
You should have everything hooked up as in normal flight.
Flight mode does not matter.

This method works for most ESCs but not all. As mentioned in the manual, we really recommend you do the manual calibration instead, which always works.
But if you do decide to try this anyway, the cable should be connected and the CLI switch should be in flight mode. Be prepared to pull the power if a motor starts shuddering. Remember, the props should be OFF to avoid any danger of injury.
