Trying to get OSD/FPV working

Thanks to a lot of help from several folks here on this User Group, I recently got my 3DR built Hexa Ardrucopter flying.  It has the APM 2.5+ and is running firmware version 2.9.1b.  I got the telemetry working and it seems to work really well.  Now I would like to get the OSD/FPV working.  It is the 1.2GHz version with the 3DR installed Micro CCD Camera.

I set the DIP switches on the OSD/FPV receiver to switch #1 down and all of the others up.  I also switched the A/B switch to the ""A"" position.  I powered up my Spektrum DX7 transmitter and then connected my main flight battery to pretend that I was going to be flying.  Then I connected a separate 3S Lipo battery to the OSD/FPV connector for the transmitter on the Hexa Copter.  I had connected the one end of the video cable supplied by 3DR to the A/V out jack on the OSD/FPV receiver and the other end (RCA type connector) to the video input on a TV.  I expected to see the OSD/FPV image on the screen but there was no indication of any signal from the OSD/FPV receiver..  The LED on the Receiver next to the A/V Out jack did not light at all at any time.

I took a picture (ending in 220229) of the OSD/FPV transmitter with its battery connected showing the LEDs that are on. The other picture (ending in 220449) was taken with the OSD/FPV battery disconnected but the flight battery still connected.  Note that the LED on the right side of the PCB is not on. Also the metal sheet metal that encases the FPV transmitter would get quite hot (almost too hot to touch).

What do I need to do to get the OSD/FPV to work?

Thanks,

Dale

  • When I received my Hexa C it came with the 1.2GHz FPV and camera. I decided I wanted to go 5.8 and wanted a higher line CCD camera with better light (dusk/dawn) capability. So I bought a Fatshark, 720 CCD and a ImmersionRC Tx 600. I have since deinstalled the old and installed the new.

Point being, in order to install everything new I used this link to understand the the circuitry and power distribution for the OSD, here... http://copter.ardupilot.com/wiki/common-on-screen-display-for-fpv/

I took the copter apart and traced out all my lines. Then I built temporary patch cables and tested on the bench. If something did not light up, I traced my wires and compared to the schematic. Here is a pic of my final setup...

    what a mess huh...

At least for me, until I had the schematic on the screen, dismantled the copter, traced my lines, the knotted maze of wires were a mystery. Depending on your comfort level, take pictures prior to disassembly, grab a pen, paper to make connection notes, take a screw driver and dig in.

  • seeing you have a separate supply for your video osd/vtx you can hook up that battery only for the time being to test

the flight battery is not needed at this time

the best thing to do is verify the voltage supply is right for the osd/vtx/camera

set the switches to the default positions on both tx and rx of the video system

if you have video then you can change one switch to a desired setting on the vtx and try them one by one on the receiver until you get video again.

    - check to make sure the antennas are correct for vtx/vrx and tight

    - verify that the camera is connected to the right input on the osd, and the output on osd goes to the transmitters input

most osds will trigger on and inject the video overlay once a video signal is detected
so in some cases a flashing light will go solid when it does this

you can try changing switches on the receiver until video does appear
you should'nt hurt anything doing it on the rx end while on

one last thing to check is the tvs video input selection is on the right inputs you are using
