Not sure if I understand completely but polygon shaped fences aren't support in arducopter 3.1.5 (or even 3.2). Only the circular fence is available which can be accessed from Config/Tuning, GeoFence (when connected to the vehicle).
I would have to agree with Hugues. BUT, Randy and the rest of the developers do an outstanding job and I thank you for your wisdom so that I can have an awesome flight controller.
I use to be able to draw a ploy and then put points around the poly as a Geo Fence, i also remembered that I was using Arduplane. I thought I could do the same thing with Arducopter, I guess not. Also, i did read about the geo fence with the cylinder(watched your video). So if I plan a mission how would I set the params? Looking at a map of the area I'm planning a mission, how can I tell how big to make the radius if I want to stay withing a rectangle field? I hope I'm making sense. Thank you for the reply.
You'd have to look at the farthest point of the mission and then make the radius larger than that by say... 100m. Same goes for the maximum altitude of the mission. The fence can be a curse if it triggers an RTL at a bad time so it's best not to make the area too tight. It's really there to stop the vehicle from just flying off into the sunset, never to be seen again.
Adding support for the polygon fences is on the to-do list but to be honest, not a ton of people are asking for it so I can't make any promises.
I would encourage and push this polygon geofence functionality. It adds security in zones where a cylinder shape fence does not fit and will be a big plus to certify APM toward the European regulators (future commercial flights).

Here's the issue on the to-do list just for reference.
