Video cable for GoPro Hero 4

I've recently purchased an iris+ with the Live View kit. I have a gopro 4 and am not receiving the video on my monitor? I tried switching to a Gopro 3 and the video works fine. I'm trying to figure out if the issue is with my hero 4 camera or the cable. Is it possible that the video cable is only compatible with the hero 3? Thanks!

  • Well, I can certainly see how this would be frustrating.  I'm a member of the Iris+ owners on Facebook and have not come across hearing anything about this there.  I am an Iris+ owner, using the Live View with a GoPro4 Silver.  All work together exceptionally well, aside from the fuzziness due to antenna issues (not GoPro or 3DR related).

While I don't have a specific answer as to why it does not work, I can tell you that 3DR doesn't support (technically) the GP4..only the GP3.  That said, your best work around on this would be the following:

    1. Review the install videos provided on the 3DR website and follow them to a finite T.  The plug that gets installed into the vTX is very specific (smooth side down, etc).

    2. Join the Facebook forum Facebook Iris+ owners group The support on this site is AWESOME and I would expect your issue to be resolved quickly - or at least some robust information.

    3.  You may very well have received a bad cable that plugs into the GP4.  They are fairly inexpensive if bought online (eBay) and you might find that a bad batch was made.

    4. Double check that your vTX is not fried.  I recently learned that by powering up the vTX without an antenna attached will fry it and render it useless....even for a millisecond.  The signal is kept inside the vTX and ends up burning the hardware.

Good luck in your fix.  I'm hopeful you won't be without your FPV long!!

    • Another data point....  I took the plunge and picked uo a GoPro 4 Silver and after muddling through the 3DR FPV monitor settings to configure the correct channel and diversity setting it works great... at least on the bench.  I have not flown it yet.

    • What range are you getting from the LiveView?  3DR tells me that it's only 100 meters, mine isn't getting by 20 to 30 meters and even then the video is broken.

  • Dave or Richard, any updates on getting your GP 4's working??

    • Nothing new here. I've borrowed a friends GP3 & it's working well. Trying to find another GP4 just to see if it works. I'll post as soon as I do.
  • Richard and Dave, what version firmware are you running on the GoPro's?

More often than not it's the camera not the Live View Kit.

    • I am going to install my FPV from 3DR this weekend and I am using the Hero 4 silver. Before I open the box, can anyone provide any input on what makes compatiblle? Some folks seem to have no troubles, others claim the Hero4 will not work with 3DR's FPV.

    • Richard,

I am pretty much where you are.  I have the FPV kit but haven't bought the GoPro yet.  I was wanting the 4 Silver, but seems like a good chance it may not work.  How did yours turn out?  Please post your GoPro firmware version with your result.

    • Still no luck for me. Here's the reply I received from 3DR:
"We have noticed some GoPro Hero4's that are not outputting the video, we have tried a few, and most of them work. We are attributing it to a Firmware Issue, but we are not certain. Please contact GoPro to attempt to update the firmware to see if this corrects the problem.

You may also want to verify if the GoPro is under NTSC instead of Pal since this may also be a cause, you can find a tutorial video for this below"

I've upgraded to the latest firmware & confirmed NTSC. Next step is contact GoPro tomorrow.
    • I am going to hold off on buying a camera until this gets sorted out.  Please post what you find out from GoPro.
