About Me:

I am a born again RC Heli (and occasional plank) guy. 22 years ago was flying a Kalt Baron. Stopped when 1st child arrived. Started helis again earlier this year and love it. I am in the software business although I am no programmer.

Please tell us a bit about your UAV interest

I'm interested in UAV, from 3 perspectives. 1. Video 2. Autonomous flight - just the geek in me I suppose 3. FPV. This looks seriously cool and adds greatly to control over video

I have been interested for a while in the possibility of creating a VTOL fixed wing which transitions into forward flight after a vertical take off using multirotors. Finding this article prompted me to post this to ask whether this could be…

Andrew Bailey replied to Andrew Bailey's discussion Pixhawk vs APM 2.6 for Photogrammetry
"A follow on question. Should I plan to install APM firmware on the Pixhawk or run the Pix4 firmware? Again, this is specifically to fly photogrammetry missions, so need to be able to plan & fly a grid pattern, trigger photos at the right times etc.…"

Andrew Bailey replied to Andrew Bailey's discussion Pixhawk vs APM 2.6 for Photogrammetry
"Thanks for your reply Iskess. I will need logging to pick up GPS altitude and attitude data for each triggered cam shot. So it may be that Pixhawk is the way to go on this account.
So, if I go with Pixhawk will I be able to everything that is…"

Some advice please. I need to take an informed decision on whether to purchase a Pixhawk or an APM 2.6.I intend to fly fixed wing photogrammetry missions. As such I need full functionality on the Mission Planner and to be able to log GPS position…

I am probably being stupid on this, but am I right in thinking that the way RTL works is that when invoked it will return to Home as defined in the Mission Planner? If this is the case then would it not be more useful for RTL to return to the GPS…

Andrew Bailey replied to Andrew Bailey's discussion Hex with AC2?
"OK, loaded AC2 (x mode) this afternoon and she flies. I'm using a Jakub frame with Arducopter 880 motors and 10x4.5 props and it does need a bit of tuning. It's too windy to do anything useful with it today. I tried alt hold and loiter and it did…"

Has anyone successfully run AC2 on a Hex? Or should I wait for a while?

"I would certainly like to be there. Have it in my diary. Should be bringing arducopter based hexacopter and a quad or two."

Andrew Bailey commented on Robert Beatty's blog post Arducopter's Sonar-based Altitude hold works great
"OK, well it looks like I can stop it climbing like a homesick angel by reducing the PID's. Problem is that it is next to useless at actually holding altitude. Ho hum..  Unless anyone has a brainwave I think I will give up on the sonar for the time…"

Andrew Bailey commented on Robert Beatty's blog post Arducopter's Sonar-based Altitude hold works great
"OK. Thanks. I understand. I am trying working with the PID's again. With some success. I have reduced Sonar PID down to 0.040;0.010;0.015 and it has stopped going straight up when I engage hold. It is also responding to up and down commands on the…"

Andrew Bailey commented on Robert Beatty's blog post Arducopter's Sonar-based Altitude hold works great
"I have been engaging alt hold at between 1 metre and around 8 metres max.
Randy, not sure I understand your comment about the behaviour being fine. Do you mean the increase I see in throttle output? "

Andrew Bailey commented on Robert Beatty's blog post Arducopter's Sonar-based Altitude hold works great
"I agree. There has to be something odd going on here. I ran the AP_Rangefinder_test.pde again and iave clipped the results below. The quad was around a metre from a hard surface floor. I then put my hand underneath and then took it away again,…"

Andrew Bailey commented on Robert Beatty's blog post Arducopter's Sonar-based Altitude hold works great
"Randy, I had already checked that and have reset it using the CLI. Sorry. I'm using the default PIDs. I have tried tuning these and it does not really make any difference at all.

The only other thing I can think of doing is ordering another sensor…"

Andrew Bailey commented on Robert Beatty's blog post Arducopter's Sonar-based Altitude hold works great
"Robert, I do like your 'out of the box' thinking, but I definitely have the config correct. It works pretty well in fact using just the barometer hold, so I know that it is set up right. Thanks anyway."
