Bill Harrison replied to Bill Harrison's discussion Looking for input - tethered Quad platform to fly communication antenna
"A multicopter will work because we will figure out how to stabilize it.

Apologies for repeating myself:  a blimp is not a solution for us.  ;-)"

"System needs to move with user, if needed, and also needs to be deploy-able at sea."

Bill Harrison replied to Bill Harrison's discussion Looking for input - tethered Quad platform to fly communication antenna
"Coax losses are a concern, but they are greatly offset by the gain in antenna height.  We can use a relatively thin coax (1/8" or so).
GPS is not an option for us... GPS is not 100% coverage, and yes, there are GPS denial circumstances to…"

"Yes, firmware...  can you tell I don't know anything, LOL.

Tau Labs is an open source project for FW development...  (google is my friend).

interesting...."

"Tom,

That is good info:  "arming can be turned off"  because I am learning that is one of the issues...  I bought the OpenPilot mini CC3D a couple days ago, this one:

What is a 'fw'?"

"JoeBob,

I like the way you think.  ;-)

We tried something similar early on, but we were using four lengths of 1/8" fiberglass rods, about 14" long, arranged like splayed feet, with small weights at the bottom.  Response was a bit sluggish…"

"Sorry, are you being funny?

I was wondering about an algorithm that could sense the 'end of tether' and more aggressively pitch into the wind...  something like that."

"Except when a strong wind carried it, laterally, to the end of the tether - then, look out!

What, like a lawn dart?  Spiked, right?

Any thoughts on mitigating this?"

Thanks again.  Good info.  ;-)"

"Cala,

Interesting, thank you!  I will dig into both of those controllers.

The CC3D controller looks interesting.  Do you know if it requires an arming sequence?  Meaning I wonder if it will control the ESC's without a receiver hooked up, but just…"

"Darius,

I am familiar with that indiegogo campaign.

That device is quite a bit different than what I am trying to do, although it outwardly looks similar.

I have already done internet searches.

Thanks"

"Darius,

Sorry you feel the time is wasted.

You said:  "This is not a project, just your idea fix."
I disagree, even though I am unsure what an 'idea fix' is.  It is a project, one that we have been working on for some time.  I posted a pic…"

"Great feedback so far, guys...  thanks.
I am unfamiliar with in-line quoting on this forum, so I will just try to address different points without citing the poster(s).

Yes, I think I need a better understanding of how FC works... arming, etc.

I…"

"The original questions I am seeking help with:

Do I need to use a small buck converter to deliver 5 volts to the Naze?  Information I am finding online is not clear... remember I am not running a BEC
What is a good way to control motor speed...…"

Bill Harrison replied to Bill Harrison's discussion Looking for input - tethered Quad platform to fly communication antenna
"Hi Bill,

you should get real, your project is generally down.
To stabilize your drone, airframe, you should attach antenna to point downward.

Antenna needs to point up.  Pointing down causes issues with bringing the system down to operator and…"

"So how do I test if the FC will take over?  Say I have the prototype on the bench, and am using a servo tester as a throttle.  Motors are spinning, props are attached (I know, I know).  Unit is in a safe place for testing.  What causes the FC to…"
