Please tell us a bit about your UAV interest

Been into fixed-wing foam with Paparazzi for a couple of years. Currently dabbling in multicopters, learning ArduPilot as part in the CanberraUAV team (2012 Out Back Challenge, here we come). http://www.CanberraUAV.com/ I also sell Paparazzi hardware from my secret underground lair: http://aerofu.com/

Chris Gough replied to Robert Giordano's discussion Test Stand Setup? in ArduCopter User Group
"What you want is called a "string cage". I use a big (20l) paint tin with a rim-clamp, and short lengths of light cord. Fasten one cord to each arm near the motor. Hold the quad above the can lid, a bit less than one arm-length above it, and trap…"

Chris Gough replied to Justinclouds's discussion Low cost, high endurance, disposable fixed wing platform
"Aerosonde did exactly this sort of thing 15+ years ago with a twin boom pusher, superficially similar to a Muggin. I'm sure they can sell you what you need, but they are part of AII now so not at $5K :)

That aircraft has some interesting…"

Chris Gough replied to Luis Vale Gonçalves's discussion Unobtanium magic foam
"re-purposing ear plugs might be better than butchering other peoples laptops. You can get the Brussels sprout flavoring off them with detergent (or just use new ones)."

Chris Gough replied to mark's discussion Not all 5.8GHz Circular Polarized Antennas are created equal in ArduCopter User Group
"I don't have experience with either brand, but are you sure you're not mixing left and right polarisation? If you do that, pretty much the only signal to get through will be the reflection."

Maybe. Here, I added a question to the robotics stack exchange, let's see how that goes.

Chris Gough commented on Kevin Hester's blog post Please do three small things to help create drones.stackexchange.com
"This is an interesting idea, I'm following... But how does this compliment/work with the existing DIYDrones forum format? Is it splitting the community, in essence a fork? Stack exchange has some great features, if it works out it could be a more…"

Chris Gough commented on Sam Short's blog post Another example of how to conduct commercial drone ops
"Here is a hint of their conditions:

Our specially designed aircraft operate at low noise levels and are capable
of flying at altitudes of up to 121 metres (400feet). Unlike traditional
helicopters or fixed wing aircraft we are also able to get…"

"Hi Darrell,

They don't, they have an operators certificate.

I would be very interested to read schedules 1 and 2 of the certificate (not published as far as i can tell). They might…"

Chris Gough replied to David Anders's discussion The flying quad and flying higher props... in ArduCopter User Group
"There's red loctite and blue loctite at my local shop. The red one is supposed to be permanent, I dont use it. The blue one is semi-permanent, that's the one to use. At a pinch, nail varnish works too. You can thin it with acetone if required for…"

Chris Gough replied to Randy Brazeau's discussion What is a "Pilot"? in ArduCopter User Group
"In AU, "pilot in command" has a legal definition. It's the person responsible (IANAL, that's just my understanding of regulation CASA 101).

It's not a badge of honor. The only time you fly and are not the pilot is wham you are flying with an…"

Chris Gough replied to Stefan Gofferje's discussion Multi-rotor endurance factors? in ArduCopter User Group
"The terms are only interchangable if you use them imprecisely. When the first sentence of the Wikipedia definition says "region of space", it means volume.

I didn't exactly ignore aerodynamics of lift, I said 'magic 100% efficient propellers'. The…"

Chris Gough replied to Stefan Gofferje's discussion Multi-rotor endurance factors? in ArduCopter User Group
"longer props have a higher aspect ratio (better lift:drag ratio, more lifting force for a given ammount of work. i.e. better prop efficiency). But longer props require a bigger frame, which is more weight.
Higher voltage batteries/motors means less…"
