About Me:

Former RC plane enthusiast, full size airplane pilot, computer engineer, and programmer.

Please tell us a bit about your UAV interest

I fantasized about autopilots in RC in the early 90's, actually experimenting with a few computer platforms, but nothing was fast and light enough to do the job. Now, it's a whole new world.

Dave Wilkeson replied to Dave Wilkeson's discussion Need help with gimbal servos
"I am running servos directly. You are using brushless gimbal motors. Are you using a gimbal controller as well?"

Dave Wilkeson commented on Jani Hirvinen's blog post jDrones News: jD-IOBoard v1.0
"So that would be the green FTDI wire to the RST contact just above the right (grn) contact on the IOBOard?"

Dave Wilkeson commented on Jani Hirvinen's blog post jDrones News: jD-IOBoard v1.0
"I have an IOboard that I bought in early 2013. I programmed it with the old software and it's working. I'd like to change the way it's functioning, but when I try to connect with the new configuration software, I can't connect to the boot loader.…"

I recently purchased a jDrones GoPro gimbal.  For simplicity sake, I bought their 9g analog servos and their 5V BEC as well.  I hooked the signal lines up per the wiki to RC10 and RC11 on my APM2.5, and I built a Y cable to split the BEC output to…

Dave Wilkeson replied to Randy's discussion ArduCopter 2.9 / 2.9.1 released
"Just wanted to say that I finally had the guts to switch out of stabilize mode today and I am super excited about how well my 3dr hexa with 880 motors flew. I was only planning to test alt hold and loiter but it flew so great that I did multiple…"

Dave Wilkeson replied to Dave Wilkeson's discussion Consensus: Futaba 8FG or Aurora 9?
"For what it's worth, I got a used Futaba 8fg off Helifreak.com yesterday. A lot of people are upgrading to the new 14sg so there's a bunch of 8fg radios appearing on the used market."

Dave Wilkeson replied to Randy's discussion ArduCopter 2.9 / 2.9.1 released
"My new Futaba 8FG will be arriving tomorrow, and I will be replacing my Spectrum 6 channel on my hexa with it. So is the consensus to use ppm or pwm with 2.9.1 (Futaba brand 6208 rx)? What about with 2.9.2? Has anyone posted how to determine the…"

Dave Wilkeson replied to Joe Breznai's discussion Futaba T8FG PPM/PWM decoder
"I have a T8FG on the way and was wondering the same thing, which is how I bumped into this thread.  Hopefully someone can help us both out."

Dave Wilkeson replied to Randy's discussion ArduCopter 2.9 / 2.9.1 released
"I've been diligently following this thread, but maybe I missed this.  What's the specific minuses for setting INS_MPU6K_FILTER to 20 or lower?

For example, my hover z is -7 to -13 (I haven't tested it under speed).  I haven't tested it at 20 yet,…"

Help! I can't decide which one. I have always used Futaba's in the FM days and never had a complaint. I was given a cheap 6 channel Spektrum radio (actually 5 channels because chan 6 mimics aileron...go figure) which I'm not impressed with at all,…

Dave Wilkeson replied to MarvinS's discussion APM2.5+ Gone
"@oliver - I completely agree with your approach. I just don't think we can count on everybody following a methodical approach. Therefore some default limits and sanity checks seem prudent.

@tim - I think RTL is a good fail safe as long as you do…"

Dave Wilkeson replied to MarvinS's discussion APM2.5+ Gone
"I asked/mentioned this on the 2.9 release thread and didn't get any responses....I don't understand why, by default, RTL is allowed to go active if home is far away? It seems like that should be on and you should be forced to disable it if you are…"

Dave Wilkeson replied to Randy's discussion ArduCopter 2.9 / 2.9.1 released
"I would have stuck this comment on the end of the discussion about balancing motors but I couldn't find it (this thread is getting huge!). I had great luck today balancing my motors while they were attached to the copter. I simply clamped a piece of…"

Dave Wilkeson replied to Randy's discussion ArduCopter 2.9 / 2.9.1 released
"Has anyone tried completely wrapping the cased APM in dubro foam like we used to do with receivers and batteries in RC airplanes? I was thinking about doing that and then zip tying the whole thing to the stackup. Or would that mess with the…"

Dave Wilkeson replied to Randy's discussion ArduCopter 2.9 / 2.9.1 released
"I'm seeing something odd with 2.9 that I never noticed with 2.8.1 on my APM 2.5.  My copter is sitting dead still on a table and I'm seeing the altitude (and groundspeed a litte) drifting both up and down.  It starts out right around 0 on boot,…"
