Ed Taunton replied to George's discussion Has anyone heard of the major spraying UAS manufacturers approaching the EPA about minimum application volumes? in Agricultural UAVs
"Closest we have seen is the gas gun and splatter gun label additions for some herbicides. This has set the precedent for low volume application but we still have a larger battle with getting this approved for aerial application. The companies may…"

Ed Taunton replied to George's discussion Has anyone ever seen a UAV doing dry application (seeding or fertilizing)? in Agricultural UAVs
"What we have been doing is invasive woody weed control so not for deforestation. Many woody weeds such as Blackberry Lantana and Prickly Acacia have the ability to strangle local habitat to the environments detriment."

Ed Taunton replied to George's discussion Has anyone ever seen a UAV doing dry application (seeding or fertilizing)? in Agricultural UAVs
"Did some granular work 2 years ago using Graslan (tebuthiuron) and I'm currently developing a larger multirotor to do similar work fully automated."

Ed Taunton replied to Pierre's discussion Different kinds of sprayers used in agricultural UAVs in Agricultural UAVs
"Pierre not sure if you got this publication or not but it does provide some good background reading.

Ed Taunton replied to Pierre's discussion Cruising speed of agricultural pesticide spraying UAV in Agricultural UAVs
"Thanks George You are correct I often  tie myself in knots a bit when I try to simplify the complex. Vortices are  related to the lift produced by the aerofoil so will often have a higher impact at slow speed or in a high lift flaps down scenario.…"

Ed Taunton replied to Pierre's discussion Cruising speed of agricultural pesticide spraying UAV in Agricultural UAVs
"Ok big question so will start with the simple answer in that most sprayers are set up to suit the characteristic of the air frame on which they are fitted. This means sprayers will be calibrated to apply at the correct volumes at the safe operating…"

"I can forward you a copy of a local research document if you pm me an email address.
Do pay attention to  what George is saying as you are entering one of the most legislated areas of aviation and as a current licensed applicator I can confirm it is…"

Ed Taunton replied to Pierre's discussion Different kinds of sprayers used in agricultural UAVs in Agricultural UAVs
"It comes down to the particle size ans consistency of the droplets that you want to apply. This also has a direct effect on drift and the thus the control of where your chemical ends up. Current thinking is towards larger droplets for better control…"

"Great to catch up with a few of you. Good luck with the weather . I'm sure the rest will come down to skill and persistence. "

Ed Taunton commented on Chris Anderson's blog post Gas-powered quadcopter second Pixhawk-based finalist for The Hackaday Prize
"I can see some big challenges to come with this.
My best theroy so far for something so far would be to go a single ducted main fan (with CR props to eliminate torque) that runs to 4 separate ducts to vector thrust. a  servo controlled waste gate…"

Ed Taunton commented on Quadzimodo's blog post Need to Know - Export Controls
"Maybe just maybe this could be an argument to register all air frames with certain capabilities. If the air frames were registered the current autopilot capabilities and parameters could then be taken into account and thus enable or deny the export…"

Ed Taunton replied to Henri's discussion Skycat parachute launcher for Drones
"Fair point. I worked indirectly with Elbit skylark Uavs   that used an air cushion to minimise damage on stall recovery.
My assumption was that a small soda type gas cartridge feeding  a ballon or airbag would arrest and control descent simlar to a…"

Ed Taunton commented on Colin Snow's blog post Drone Tech Winners and Losers at the Precision Aerial Ag Conference 2014
"My view is that we will start with the smaller innovators with small machines who will prove the concepts. As the concept becomes proven the economies of scale will click in and the proven designs may be upscaled  with the expertise of larger…"

"Farmers will also support there own ahead of any outsider so any local kid who has a go will get jobs well ahead of a townie or interstate vulture. I envisage a few farmers sons will start local contract businesses much the same as for contract…"

Ed Taunton commented on Colin Snow's blog post Drone Tech Winners and Losers at the Precision Aerial Ag Conference 2014
"Good analysis Ultimately the larger companies will probably only contribute in adding air frames and production capacity for existing designs and concepts unless they can interact better with end users.
I believe the production of Ag planes took a…"
