"Yesterday I headed to the coast to find some boats with wind-vanes and to find somewhere to build a boat.
No luck with finding wind-vanes, but I may have found two places to build a boat. And topped-up my sun tan :)

"So, the problems with a wind-vane is that it requires careful setting, and it is susceptible to water coming over the bow and hitting it (this latter problem obviously does not affect yachts as the wind vane is several feet higher).
"After reading some more things and writing to people, I'm less convinced that a linear actuator directly controlling the rudder will be the right tool for the job. It's probably too many actuations. The idea you suggested earlier, re: self-steering…"
There are some interesting underwater drones out there, mostly torpedo shaped. I think one of the most promising is one that uses changing bouyancy to glide through the water at about a 45 degree angle, both down and up.
"Sorry for the late reply.

"Oh, I forgot to add: Which autopilot system?

However, this is a great project and does what we…"
"@David BoulangerGood to keep in mind. It might be different for wing sails but for a long-distance voyage it is certainly better to play on the safe side.

"I wonder how prone to capsizing either a catamaran or trimaran with a wing would be given that, with a regular sail, I would think (just a guess) that capsizes are due to the helmsman not releasing the sail in time in a gust, or catching on the…"
