Please tell us a bit about your UAV interest

I want to build an aerial magnetometer platform to fly a pre-programmed survey route at a specific altitude (very low) above water. My goal is to fly moderately precise GPS routes about 10 feet above the water. Desires would be 2 hour flight duration, relatively low speed (for better resolution surveys) and reliable data capture is a must.

"Great stuff Jon, thanks so much. The Wheel Pilot is exactly what we need. I have completed testing in the RC Boat, it performs flawlessly (when I program it correctly). We were just talking today about finding me some time to go over and adapt it to…"

"Thanks for that Monkeynutz. that is pretty much what i had dreamed up in my head, but I didn't know it already existed. I will look into that, it should work for what we want to do. We are now surveying with a 35 foot catamaran with twin 150…"

We have shifted our thinking a bit, we were originally designing an APM plane to perform survey operations for us. This is still in the works, but we now would like to solve a different problem. After trying to tow a boat towed magnetometer and…

"Rob,
After a little more research, the audio that the user hears is actually just varying voltages that are converted to a squeal by an audio board and speaker. If I capture it before the audio board it is still in voltage form, so most of the work…"

"Interesting thought, and one I have not explored. I am still waiting on some data from the manufacturer of the magnetometer. We switched to flux-gate mag which is said to have a much faster frame rate, most mags only sample about 10 times per…"

"I will likely end up switching to a rotorcraft of some sort. Looking at the frame rates of the mags I need to fly at around 6 mph unless I can find a faster one. Still pondering and sketching, definitely going ArduPilot with APM. Probably ordering a…"
