Please tell us a bit about your UAV interest

Always been a fan of remotely-operated devices, but I didn't realize useful drones were affordable and available until a few weeks ago when I stumbled on this site. As a caretaker of some rugged rural property with 20+ acres, I like the idea of doing aerial patrols of the land, especially during the summer months when I'm less active and the snakes are more active.

John A. Whiting replied to Chance Roth's discussion Almost on the inside of the Pocket Drone project - some info, thoughts and review in Pocket Drone User Group
"I'm glad to hear that yours has worked out fairly well.  Are you a pilot of some experience?  I am relatively inexperienced, myself, so I suspect that your experience made some of the difference."

"Sir, I applaud your courage in facing some decidedly unhappy customers.  I hope that you will receive the respect and courtesy that such courage has earned.
I hope that you will be able to give us some insights, within the legal constraints put upon…"

John A. Whiting commented on Quadzimodo's blog post Plexidrone - Latest Crowdfunded Drone
"The 35 minute flight is using the ground effect?  Well, for a terrain-following drone, that could be useful.

"Wonderful news! Perhaps these guidelines can be adapted for agricultural use of air-borne sensors, as well. It might be awhile before it's okay for me to autonomously patrol my property, though."

"@Arthur:  I used to program macros for ImageFX on my old Amiga; I came up with one macro that would automatically draw a U.S. flag properly scaled to the requested image size (the flag specs are all mathematical relationships).  I also wrote a macro…"

"It gets even more complicated when you have multiple people writing the software.
There was a Mars probe that crashed because the European team was doing its calculations in meters and the American team was calculating in feet.  So, when the…"

"@Arthur:  Until I get a big-kid 'copter, DroidPlanner2 is a video game on my phone.  But an interesting one.  [grin]"

John A. Whiting commented on Brandon Basso's blog post DroidPlanner 2.0 Beta Announced
"I've been learning to fly with the toy V262 quadcopter, so I don't yet have something sophisticated enough to work as a UAV.  I am eying several different off the shelf 'copters, though, so I might be able to join the big kids by the end of the…"

I found this link in the Geeks Are Sexy newsletter, about some display goggles for 3D/2D movie viewers:  Vuzix 1200 Display Given that they are 3D-capable as well as 2D, might this make 3D visual piloting a useful feature? I'm very new to this field…

"I'm in a similar position to Iggy, and possibly even more of a newbie.

Let me tell you my situation, and perhaps someone will have some advice.

I am a former electronic service technician whose soldering skills were merely adequate.  I am now…"
