About Me:

Research Assistant at Brno University of Technology, Institute of Aerospace Engineering

Please tell us a bit about your UAV interest

We have got a few airframes (fixed wing) ranging from 1kg to an OPAV of 600kg MTOW. Most of them are our own designs. We do use commercial as well as open-source autopilots. We develop parachute recovery systems. We participate on a botany research projects with our UAVs (http://www.invaznirostliny.cz/), cooperate with regional first-responders etc. We are performing flight dynamics research on our platforms.

Petr Dvorak replied to Robert Kyamoto's discussion Motor not responding to inputs on Ch 3 in ArduPlane User Group
"Set ARMING_REQUIRE = 0 and you will see. If it does not help, your problem is most probably not caused by arming."

Petr Dvorak replied to Anna Tian's discussion Best open source autopilots v.s. commercial autopilots for conventional fixed wing unmanned aircraft usage
"Hi Forest Mapper,
thank you for your neat offer, however I am not in a position to acquire a complete system. Being part of Institute of Aerospace Engineering at our local university, I like to fiddle with the airplanes myself:-)
We are working in…"

Petr Dvorak replied to Anna Tian's discussion Best open source autopilots v.s. commercial autopilots for conventional fixed wing unmanned aircraft usage
"Our experience:
We had commercial AP, threw it out 3 years ago and fly APMs and Pixhawks since then.
We are much happier now. No integration problems, no closed code, no ITAR restrictions, no legal restrictions, better documentation, better…"

Petr Dvorak replied to Anna Tian's discussion Best open source autopilots v.s. commercial autopilots for conventional fixed wing unmanned aircraft usage
"Agreed, except that we managed to get the same capability for 1/10 of that price tag... (OK, we are fine with an EDU licence of SFM software as an university using our UAVs for research ... but still).

On the other hand, within the professional…"

"Doug: there is already a selection of CO2 systems, so we wanted to do something different:-)
General advantages of the pyro-actuated system over CO2-propelled as I see them:
- faster
- lighter
- more reliable

Don't know about the price and safety -…"

Petr Dvorak commented on Petr Dvorak's blog post Yet another recovery system...
"Hans: on the ground a safety pin is present that effectively short-circuits the pyro, preventing any current in the circuit that could potentially cause a deployment.
Regarding the EMI issues (which are relevant only once the system is armed / in…"

"Ali: Thanks. Sure it can be used on fixed wing platforms. If you are able to fit it in (at the moment the outer dimensions are 100mm in diameter and 100mm height), it shall work even better than with the multirotor - simply because you typically…"

Petr Dvorak replied to Norbert Kipp's discussion PPM SUM with other than 8 channels
"Just to report that I was successful with connecting JETI Rsat2 to APM 2.5 (no modifications to ppm encoder) - the "input 1" approach as per wiki.
PPM output on RX is set to 8ch. I would like to use more, but I have no idea how to access them in…"

Petr Dvorak replied to iskess's discussion Looking for best laptop screen to see in the sun in ArduPlane User Group
"We have been using IBM Thinkpad T42 and T43 with 14.1" matt screens, resolution 1024x768 and 1400x1050 respectively. Both have been a pain to use outdoors - even under a cloudy sky, it has been very hard to spot the pointer to actually navigate on…"
