About Me:

I'm an aerospace structures engineer with a strong interest in flight simulation and novel UAVs

Please tell us a bit about your UAV interest

I'm very interested in the production of small sized UAVs. Where possible I'd be looking for novel solutions in order to test them out. Coanda flows are a strong area of interest for me.

Phill Scott commented on Phill Scott's blog post MAAXX Europe UAV 'Racing'
"Yeah, I think so.  I'm not a software/programmer - I prefer hardware and flying, but I think I'm going to give this a go.  On the face of it, it seems 'easy' but I think it's going to have it's challenges.

The organisers are going to put up a…"

"Made a small mistake - the Track envelope is 27m x 2!

(25m straights, spaced 2m apart joined with constant (1m) radius curves at each end (hence 27m!))"

Phill Scott commented on NiMA Asghari's blog post Airbus Cargo Drone Challenge submission phase ended, here are a few highlights
"You know, thinking about it, I'm yet to see anything about using helicopters to move cargo in a UAV context - maybe it might be worthwhile doing a design exercise to raise the profile of cargo moving helicopters?

I'd be interested in seeing how a…"

"Rob, I do agree with your statement.  But, up until the point of instant terminal effects, I want a system that is as safe as possible - and reasonable.  The safest thing to do is to not fly, that isn't reasonable in this context, so, whats the…"

Phill Scott commented on NiMA Asghari's blog post Airbus Cargo Drone Challenge submission phase ended, here are a few highlights
"There are lots of reasons why you wouldn't want to use a very large rotor.  Safety of the untrained user being one.  I don't want one of my designs chopping someone's hand off, because they rushed in."

"I submitted a design:

I was also one of the people who wanted to better understand the limits of the competition.

It became clear to me that the configuration is protected by…"

"That's quite the RC vehicle you're going to have! Hope you've got a big red button in there just in case!

I am looking at a self designed RC mule type vehicle rather than converting a full size product, but am keen to see what you come up with."

"Hey LD - great piece of kit.  My start-up is working to enable this kind of system over the next 3 months for aerial vehicles."

"Bill - hows it going? I'll have my CNC router next week, so I'm starting to look at what my device might look like.  I've got a few people who are interested in working on this kind of thing.  I think we'll be a while mixing this in with work and…"

Phill Scott commented on Chris Anderson's blog post Using LIDAR-Lite to sweep an arc for sense-and-avoid
"Mark,

Neato was developed for indoor use really.  You wouldn't be able to get reliable results outdoors with a UAV.  The system itself is very simple, there would be no problems getting a system suitable for outdoors to use essentially the same…"

"Looking good Bill.

Only thing that jumps to mind is to check that you have set these up so that the sensor detection faces are the same distance away from the centre of the plate so that you don't have an offset problem in your measurements?

I…"
