About Me:

I am a 53 year old electrical engineer with a love of anything with a microprocessor. I live in frigid Wisconsin and I am convinced there are not enough hours in the day for all my hobbies.

Please tell us a bit about your UAV interest

New to R/C but learning fast. My main interest is quadcopters. I am starting with a QAF500 copy cat and I have about five hours of flight time as of today (3/3/2013).

Rich Huhn replied to Damo's discussion altitude hold drift in ArduCopter User Group
"I can't answer your question regarding drift, but I have learned the hard way that you don't need to switch back into STAB mode to adjust the altitude in ALT_HOLD mode. Just use your throttle stick while in ALT_HOLD mode to move to a new height,…"

Rich Huhn replied to Ted Weerts's discussion How to reduce the mag field reading
"Ted-

Are you talking about the mag offsets? Mine were off the charts until I figured out that I need to eliminate ferrous metal from my air frame. Test your APM compass off the air frame with nothing but a USB connection to MP. Then compare to…"

Rich Huhn replied to Urkadurka's discussion ALT HOLD issue, the quad start to raise quickly
"Paolo-

I'm not an expert, but I don't thing GPS is used whatsoever in ALT_HOLD mode. Do you have sonar? If so, try without sonar."

Rich Huhn replied to Richard Boyhan's discussion Unable to arm firmware 3.0
"Hey Richard. Maybe I can help you for a change. I had the same "problem" with 3.0 when I loaded it last weekend. This is copied from Randy's latest post on the 3.0 "release".

pre-arm checks to ensure all calibration has been performed before…"

Rich Huhn replied to Søren Kuula's discussion Does ArduCopter work well with negative above-start-location altitudes?
"This is of interest to me as well. I live in a very hilly area and would love to do some missions "over the bluff". Maybe photograph some of the peregrine falcons nesting below. Or at least give them something to talk about.

Anyone with experience…"

Hello-Had a run-away crash last weekend and I am still trying to figure out just what's happening. Looking at the logs I see several short-lived failsafe events that looked like this...1) So what might have caused this brief failsafe event? I was a…

Rich Huhn replied to Brad's discussion 3DR Hexa with Futaba T8J?
"The basics:

Between the APM2.5 and your Futaba receiver you should have one ground wire, one +5v power wire (to power the receiver from the APM), and one signal wire for each channel you intend ti use. I believe your transmitter/receiver combo will…"

Rich Huhn replied to Ben Shey's discussion Connecting minimosd to computer question
"Yes, you will need an FTDI board or FTDI cable with the USB/RS232 conversion chip (FTDI chip) built into the cable. Google FTDI for more info. The board or cable will plug into the five pin header on the minimosd, same place your telemetry data…"

Rich Huhn replied to Stefan Gofferje's discussion Design help needed: driver for Hobby King 3W LEDs on APM ARM LED out
""This is the main question - what do they mean with "input: 2.5 - 3 V"...?"

That's the typical voltage drop across the LED junction, probably at rated power (3W). This might help you as well.

Rich Huhn replied to Stefan Gofferje's discussion Design help needed: driver for Hobby King 3W LEDs on APM ARM LED out
"The HK link for your LED would lead me to believe that this LED will have a voltage drop of 2.5 - 3.0 volts while dissipating 3W. Using ohm's law (P=VI) (3watts / 3volts = 1amp). We will be running 1 amp through this circuit. Now if you want to…"

Rich Huhn replied to Richard Boyhan's discussion Flight Planner and Video Device
"Where are these options? I would be very interested in bringing video into Mission Planer with a capture device. I did not know this was possible! I am running Mission Planner 1.2.36. I have poked around looking for these options, but can't seem to…"

Rich Huhn replied to Kenobi's discussion Futaba and APM2.5 compatibility
"For what it is worth, I am using the APM2.5 with T8J and a FrSky received. I do not have the problems described by other APM/Futaba users. I "think" it is the Futaba Rx with APM that is at issue. Hopefully someone with more experience that I can…"

Rich Huhn replied to Rich Huhn's discussion Struggling with ALT_HOLD not working APM2.5 with 2.9.1 firmware

Rich Huhn replied to Rich Huhn's discussion Struggling with ALT_HOLD not working APM2.5 with 2.9.1 firmware
"Scott & John-

Thank you for your advice. I DO have a new Futaba 8FG transmitter coupled with a FrSky 8 channel receiver. I guess it is possible that the TX/RX hiccuped and kicked my quad into failsafe (and gently landed it). That would make sense.…"
