Hello! Today I want to tell You about the company's product FPV3DCam (fpv3dcam.com), a little and beautiful, you can say first of its kind - 3D video camera for fpv.

And thus, meet - The BlackBird is the smallest and cool 3D video camera real time.

Let's begin the discussion with the appearance of The BlackBird. The BlackBird is the representative of a class without hull cameras and looks like a small box the size 34 x 34 mm, consisting of two video modules, connected by a two reliable 7 pin connectors. Such design allows to separate modules and change the length of stereo connecting them with connecting cable, as well as detachable design allows setting of convergence.

On the front of The BlackBird are two lens 3.6mm ( maybe 2.5 mm, depending on set of delivery, lenses standard M12), led - indicator, holders of lenses, which are hidden ultra compact high quality video sensors OmniVision OV7950 on the sensor 1/4" CMOS. The size of the array of pixels 656 x 492, image quality 470 TVL.

Rear 3D camera is a board to the locations of electronic components - all parts are soldered to the Board very efficiently and accurately. Also here is an interface connector to connect The BlackBird to the video transmitter (video glasses, monitor, etc) and voltage. By the way, the range of supply voltage camera from 5 to 12 volts, allowing you to use LiPo batteries 2S or 3S.

The outgoing video signal from the camera is transmitted in the format NTSC 525/60, 3D - Field Sequential 3D, which allows to use standard video transmitter in FPV system. And get in the video glasses quality Video in 3D, which allows us to more accurately navigate in space. The person using The BlackBird in FPV, feelings when managing rc model become more real, he feels the speed, volume, perform any complex maneuvers, becomes an easy game... you Can tell people use The BlackBird in FPV begins to look at this world with two eyes that originally given to him by nature.

  • yes it is NTSC and you can play with it out to the max distance of 2000mm.

you will need to make your own cable however, also you only need the bottom cable attached, the top connectors are there just to hold the boards together.

you will also need to make a mount you can adjust to aim the cameras correctly.

you said you are using the mk1 oculas rift do you know if the next version is going to be better?

  • Yes, many people use transporter 3d with BlackBird

  • I use the Oculus Rift with the Transporter 3D and the 3DCam FPV (all from EMR Labs). The level immersion is awesome although the Oculus DK1 resolution and screen door effect are not great for FPV. This BlackBird camera module looks neat too. Might be an easy way to play with variable IPD distances on the cameras. If it's standard NTSC/PAL video then it should work nicely with the Transporter 3D.

  • i will try to post some pictures of the mounts i use for the blackbird and how to aim the cameras for best image quality

also these will work fine with any OSD you want to use

  • i use the headply goggles but a lot of people fly with the EVG 920 goggles aka the prober 920 these are very common and i and many others used them as our first fpv goggles,

the headplay are my favorite for now because they have separate IPD and focus adjustments, i do plan to get the oculas rifts's soon, but running them is an issue, EMR labs makes the transporter 3d converter for the rift, but from what i understand the resolution suffers using this, and makes the resolution look about as good as a regular fpv cam viewed through a set of fatsharks.

a friend of mine who by the way has a Phd in VR has a set and is trying to make them work with a regular HDMI converter. i am waiting to here back from him on how well they worked this way.

here is a link to a review of the rift and transporter in use with the blackbird oculas rift review its about half way down the page.

any goggles you choose need to be able to decode field sequential 3d, the new fatshark HD's wont work nore will the vuzix glasses, or the cinimizers although i think the cinimizers might be working on a FW upgrade for field sequential but i am not sure.

but for now i feel the headplays are the best for work with the blackbird, i have made some light sheilds for them and this works great and are easy to make, and with the new 1.21r FW all the issues from the past are gone.

    hope that helps

  • hello Melih,

you need to try it before you criticize it, i am not going to have a discussion of real vs video, we fly fpv its not even close to what your eye really sees. sorry to be direct but i have had all these conversations with people who have years of experience with 3d and once they got the camera in there hands they were very impressed.

the cameras we use in fpv all suffer the same resolution issues you talk about, these cameras are very good but i don't think anything i say to you will change your mind so i am not going to try

i will say this in parting, i have 7 different 3d cameras, and have been flying in 3d since 2007, do they replicate the human eye? no, the human eye would have literally millions of mega pixels if replicated correctly, this is however the most realistic experience you will get short of Eye max, for more info please see the posts by Phil Mcnally aka captain 3d, on rc groups, he has done some amazing work demonstrating the blackbirds capability's at different separation distances. here is the link to his review of the camera, along with the video he made. great work.blackbird review captain 3D

  • So what goggles can be used for stereo display of those images?

Oculus Rift would be awesome, but it doesn't have analog in so it needs a fast analog-digital converter.

  • Hello Daniel,

I think you are talking about "3D like" images, not the real 3D. "3D like" is different than real 3D. Basically if you focus the cameras from parallel to fixed point around few meters, your perspective changes and you can feel the depth. But all objects will be in same distance, this is "3D Like". Remember the crossed eye 3D images from the 90's.
You need very high resolution 50mm lenses and sensors for real 3D images because of simulating human eye resolution and perspective. Standard 3D cinemas uses 4K dual images to generating 3D effect and the range is already few meters for them, this is why they are using front of cinemascreen actions before the movie or first minutes of the movie  to say "hey are not stupid and paid these 3D glasses" :)  Anyway, these cmos cameras 470TVL, this mean the quality will be reduce to 235TVL for every eye in 3D because of Odd/Even 3D transmission. Horizontal quality will not change and you can still feel the 3D with this cameras but as I said, It works in few meters only. Or you can point the both camera to near point and feel the "3D Like".

  • I have 3 of the blackbird cameras, 2 of Egor's older transformer cameras, and both the old 3d cam from emir labs, and the new one they have out. And I can tell you from first hand experience these things work great. any one who says that 3d is useless to us in FPV has never used them, and Dosn't know what they are talking about.
The blackbird can be separated into two units, and linked with a single cable, and placed up to 2000mm apart if you are so inclined. I fly with the one on my tbs discovery pro set to 65mm, and the one on my 250mm mini quad is set to 90mm separation. The dept I see is amazing I have flown for several years using 3d flight cameras, the emir labs cameras, we're what I first used, and now I am flying the blackbirds on all my copters and my dg1000 motor glider.
I am so used to it that I won't fly any other way. It uses a single video transmitter, in my case I am using a 600 mw 5.8ghz unit from immersion Rc, along with there V3 duo Rx,this feeds video into my head play video goggles which decode and display the field sequential 3d video signal. It is very high resolution. I am so sold on 3d video for FPV, that I will go as far as putting my self out there to give anyone in the Seattle area or within 100 miles a test flight to prove it drop me a pm and if we can swing a time and place I will let you see it for yourself. I have 2 sets of goggles for my base station so I can take anyone up with me who would like to go, I have already done this for several FPV pilots on both Rc groups and that have contacted me through the blackbirds Facebook page.
There is no special equipment needed other than the camera, and goggles that can decode the signal, all your regular equipment will plug right in. These will not give you a headache, it is a very natural way to fly, you will be hooked after your first flight.
  • 1) the Camera works just fine - it is sold from February 2014 and all of our clients were very happy with it. Reviews of the BlackBird can be read here - RCGROUPS or FACEBOOK

    2) In order to transfer 3D video with The BlackBird you need a standard video transmitter, any most regular video transmitter for FPV - need just 1.

    3) despite the small 3D stereo sound effect is simply amazing! But if You are little you can divide the camera and make the stereobase up to two meters

In this video, Phil from Canada (specialist in the field of 3D) tests the camera with different stereo sound from 2 to15 cm

And one more - now The BlackBird in the store RCENERGY.RU there is a special price - $ 99 (shipping-worldwide - free)
