Hello! Today I want to tell You about the company's product FPV3DCam (fpv3dcam.com), a little and beautiful, you can say first of its kind - 3D video camera for fpv.

And thus, meet - The BlackBird is the smallest and cool 3D video camera real time.

Let's begin the discussion with the appearance of The BlackBird. The BlackBird is the representative of a class without hull cameras and looks like a small box the size 34 x 34 mm, consisting of two video modules, connected by a two reliable 7 pin connectors. Such design allows to separate modules and change the length of stereo connecting them with connecting cable, as well as detachable design allows setting of convergence.

On the front of The BlackBird are two lens 3.6mm ( maybe 2.5 mm, depending on set of delivery, lenses standard M12), led - indicator, holders of lenses, which are hidden ultra compact high quality video sensors OmniVision OV7950 on the sensor 1/4" CMOS. The size of the array of pixels 656 x 492, image quality 470 TVL.

Rear 3D camera is a board to the locations of electronic components - all parts are soldered to the Board very efficiently and accurately. Also here is an interface connector to connect The BlackBird to the video transmitter (video glasses, monitor, etc) and voltage. By the way, the range of supply voltage camera from 5 to 12 volts, allowing you to use LiPo batteries 2S or 3S.

The outgoing video signal from the camera is transmitted in the format NTSC 525/60, 3D - Field Sequential 3D, which allows to use standard video transmitter in FPV system. And get in the video glasses quality Video in 3D, which allows us to more accurately navigate in space. The person using The BlackBird in FPV, feelings when managing rc model become more real, he feels the speed, volume, perform any complex maneuvers, becomes an easy game... you Can tell people use The BlackBird in FPV begins to look at this world with two eyes that originally given to him by nature.

  • Good story Dennis,

About this story, I'm a member of MultiWii project(check the developers section) and a fan of KK boards. We are on same side and I'm really loving new designs, designers and their projects. But not customer myths.
Your experience is is a typical customer myth. Please read the Egor's answer on the page 3.

"In BlackBird picture is formed with the help of two sensors have a resolution of 420 TVL, Yes we lose horizontal resolution, but the vertical resolution  remains the same is the first."

You are talking about 1000+ TVL resolutions or 470x2 = 940TVL in some posts. Problem is you don't have any idea what you talking about. This is not helps the designers or new technologies.

Please read my first post, It was my personal comment for the designer, not for you.  and shared videos shows the unparalleled camera positions as I suggested to the designer. The designer can resolve this problem with a solid PCB like the first 3D FPV cameras from 2008-2009. or not. I'm just suggesting and he have free will.
By the way, there is no multiplied TVLs or Unbelievable camera resolutions here they are your own myths and making you nervous.  Sorry but I don't have any problem with you , this is just math and basic science about the cameras :/

Camera TVL chart in PDF format and vector. If the resolution is not enough for you Just print it in A3 format 600DPI, Resolution will be few thousand TVL and enough for your camera. You can proof the resolution and quality easily without any extra story.

Have a nice week and enjoy your setup

  • Oh BTW Egor never said the resolution is half the 480, you said that. please stop lying.
  • Really then explain why it says 480 for the emr labs cam,and 690 for my tbs 69 in color, and 800 when I have it set to black and white. I think you are confusing display and scan ability, and a printer would have its own number of lines it prints.
Pleas stop trolling. I think everyone that is reading this sees what you are doing, please let those of us interested in 3d FPV do so, if you are against the idea fine.just go away it is rude and childish to dispute everything in the manner you are doing it. if you owned a blackbird, and had actual test data on the camera, I would be willing to listen. but all you are doing is sitting there and telling everyone, "I have never seen this thing work, but I know more than the people who have, and it is impossible. I cannot figure out how it could be done, so no one can.
Let me tell you a story about a discussion I had a while back with a guy over the blade msr. if you remember it was a very cool little Rc helicopter about 5 inches long, I loved it, and bought one right away. After flying it for sometime, I felt it would be great if they could make a collective pitch version I could do tricks with, I posted a comment to that effect on run rider, a fellow much like you replied as to why this was impossible to do, he quoted mass, and gyroscopic precession issues, and claimed they could never make a cp rotor head that small. He was most insistent about it. 6 months later blade released the cp version of that helicopter. They had side stepped all his arguments by using a computer to replace the fly bar. Now today flybarless rotor heads are very common, they were just starting to catch on at that time, and it was a tech he never thought to apply to a small copter like the blade.( in all fairness I must point out he was right in one respect, they never did make one that had all the mass of a fly bar)
Just because you cannot figure out how to do something, doesn't mean someone else cannot.
Do you remember the original KK boards. same thing, people thought you could never make a simple multi copter flight controller, as the microkopter ones of the day proved, they were complex and hard to make. then kaptain kook comes out with the original open source KK board. I don't remember how many it was exactly, but it had only a few lines of code, under 100 I think. And now we fly things like this all the time, it opened a new world, and took designers in directions they never would have gone before.
So when you say "impossible" or "bad idea,it's too hard" I say, it's only impossible until someone does it.
  • Daniel,

You are reading 525 Lines from Virtual DUB, because your capture card saying "I am broadcating 525TVL NTSC data" to virtualdub, thats all:)
If you connect 800TVL camera or 100TVL or only 1TVL, Virtualdub says always 525TVL. For a real TVL measurement, you need a calibrated monitor and ISO 12233 Test Chart. You can download the chart from here

    http://www.graphics.cornell.edu/~westin/misc/ISO_12233-reschart.pdf

As the BlackBird manufacturer said on the previous posts,Horizontal resolution is half of 470TVL (235TVL)  this is maximum value you can transmit over a single frame when 3D

Please print the cart and count the visible lines from your screen for the real resolution, this is best way to finding total quality of your setup.

  • @ kolin
No I don't have any experience like that. systems like that can be cool but a lot of work to set up.
I know the transporter3d from emir labs can do what you want, and run it to a set of oculas rift goggles too.
It will even allow you to use two different cameras, and it can compensate for the differences.
But who knows what the future may hold for the blackbird, the next one May be able to do side by side 3d, but for now the only camera that can is the new 3d camera from emir labs, the problem is if you want to do side by side 3D it would be good to have higher resolution than 480 per camera sensor, and the emr labs cam is only 480 lines. the black bird actually reads as 525lines when I record to my laptop using virtual dub. what would be great is one that had 1000+ lines per camera sensor, now if it could also do side by side as well as field sequential, then we would have a very cool setup to fly FPV with.
But for now the blackbird is a great camera to fly FPV with the image is very sharp and with a good set of goggles like the head plays which are 800x600 you get a very immersive experience, it only requires a singly VTx of any type, and goggles that can display the image correctly, BTW the head plays are only 299$ that is a better price than fat sharks and they are better goggles also they only need light shields and I have a template for making them that attach with a hot glue gun and can be put on in about 15 min.
If you want to try 3D FPV this it the least expensive way to try it. Trust me you will love it once you try it. I take people up all the time, and even the ones who have flown FPV before are amazed by how different and real looking it is.
  • Hi Daniel,

Do you have experience with using two independent cameras, two video transmitters, two receivers and finally hacked video goggles? Resolution would be greater, off the shelf components and even added redundancy. I have ever wanted to try this with my original Fatshark goggles, but I worry if simple hack would work on Fatshark. My concern is they have only one decoding electronics for both displays. 3D would be great as I fly very low, but I want to avoid Headplay.

  • I remember that post on run rider. Hugo from true Rc had just gotten it and was writing about it, wow long time ago. But I remember talking to vrflyer out of Quebec he was the first FPV pilot I know who used it, that is where I first found out about it
  • Yes we have already discussed this, please read all the posts. this is the camera shown in the avatar picture on the left side of my post. I have it on my mini quad now, and the blackbird is a superior camera, Egors older transformer 3dcam was smilier to it in performance, I know, I have tested both side by side. I also have the newest one from emr labs and resolution for the new cam they have is not as good as there old one in my opinion, it also has 3d flipping issues, the new one that is. The old one works just fine.i bought one of these as soon as they hit the market, not sure how long ago that was,I have pictures from 2011 but I was flying it for a couple of years before my daughter was born, and that was 2011, so 2008 sounds about right, it is a good camera but very hard to mount sometimes, and the blackbird has a much sharper image
  • The widest setting I have used is only 90mm, but I was able to judge depth incredibly well. I was flying through terra and really tight spots immediately, I have been wanting to make a bigger one, I just have not had the time. I should be able to put a 120mm mount on my mini copter http://diydrones.com/photo/image-928/next?context=user
  • By the way, You can see the mount here - https://www.facebook.com/groups/fpv3dcam/ Many users put optionof its mount
