3D Printed Quadcopter

The project was realized in the Dassault Systemes Fablab. Matthieu designed this summer a Quadcopter with CATIA, Romain made the electronics and the controller part. Using CATIA, all the mechanical parts have been designed in 3D, the core of the drone and the rotor supports, total of 7 parts, produced in plastic ABS with the Cube 3D Printer. Different colors have been chosen to give the Quadcopter a nice look, this thanks to the nice color range support of the printing machine. 3D Printed plastic parts were then assembled with 4 carbon bars to connect the body and the rotor support. Romain for the control board, used a KK2 composed of an Arduino and an Inertial Motion Unit.
 
The first flight will be performed on Friday 18, we cross our fingers ! Flying time is estimated at 7 minutes. We will record the flight and we will keep you posted :-)

  • Just a quick corrections I did not created the control board but used the well known KK2 board :)

    Here are some specs :

    Control board : kk2

    Motors : 2290Kv

    Batteries : 610mA 2S

    Speed controllers : 6A

    Propellers : 5x3’

    Cam : Sony Super Had

    Flight time : 7 min (without FPV gear)

    @Michael : We had some problems to... from what I saw this techno (melted plastic layer) is not ready for structural parts like the body of our quad. 

    As you can see on this picture the plastics layers tends to break.

    The dimensions rendered by the printer were not exactly right so Matthieu had to scale up all the parts.

    Regarding your problem it seems that the nylon can have problem to stick to the pad if the head temperature is too low or if the glue is faulty, but I'm not an expert in 3D printing at all.

  • This is really cool! Me and my friend are experimenting of his printer with ABS but so far it's been nothing but a frustration. How do you get it to stick to the bed? We sometimes heat the bed to 120 Celsius! We also have trouble making nylon stick. Any suggestions? We're using a RepRap Pro Mendal (single extruder)
