3DR IRIS+ Beginners Guide (Part 1 of 3)

With the IRIS+ quickly becoming the most popular quadcopter in the $1,000 and under price range, we're starting to see that a lot of new IRIS customers don't have the basic knowledge to operate this advanced technology.  We have created a 3 part video series to cover everything from the basics of unboxing and assembly to advanced features and autonomous flight.  This is part 1 in the series-

    I own an Iris+ myself and although very happy with it, I have had some troubles flying it. Better to learn about all its features before trying them live.

  • Nice vid. Hope you will get at some point to explaining beginners how their copters are built, ie which are the various components, their respective roles (what are esc for ? What is an IMU ? etc). Make a vid opening the IRIS+ and explaining the layout of components - it is not because it's a ready to fly machine that beginners should not have a basic understanding of how it's built. There will also need to be a "beginner's approach to log analysis" - btw you could have a look at the APM Log Analyser tool, it's maybe easier for first time users than the log analysis in Mission Planner : I see too many people in the forums saying "so I crash what went wrong", questions that most of the time can be answered by a log analysis. Suggest you also spend some time on failsafe settings in Mission Planner.

    One correct is that compass offset learning is not done automatically on ArduCopter (it is done on Plane automatically).  What is done automatically is a lookup of the compass's declination when the vehicle first gets GPS lock.  So I agree that there shouldn't be any need for IRIS+ customers to do the compass calibration but it's actually because the calibration has been done at the factory and the declination is looked up automatically.

  • I think this is a much better approach to using the IRIS than the current way that 3dr is doing in their videos.  I really do not want to see 3DR equipment shown in the same bad light as the most phantoms because of uneducated folks just opening the box and flying with a 5 min. long video.  Great work!
