433MHz (414-454MHz) 100mW (20dBm) Super Long Distance LoRa Wireless data modem with USB and UART interface.

General:

LoRa LRS series is a low cost, high performance transparent transceiver with operating at 433MHz. It is LoRa/FSK/ GFSK/OOK modulation variety. It features small size, high output power, high sensitivity, long transmission distance and most of the parameters can be set via the command. Receive and send data to automatically switch. U s e generic UART interface. It is easy to realize the wireless data transmission with only providing the UART data. It is flexible for the users to set the UART baud rate, output power, data rate, frequency select, modulation mode select etc parameters. It is your ideal choice for designing wireless data transmission products which can be widely used on wireless data transmission field.

  • We have purchased a pair of these transmitters and so far pleased with it's performance.

    Advantages:

    - 433 MHz, it's very hard to find this frequency transmitters at the same price tag and range (apart from 3DR radios, which should have lower range).

    - We didn't make proper range testing so far, but performance 200m away were flawless. Whereas our 3DR (not original, configured for better performance) were losing the signal completely at this distance.

    - USB to UART converter inside

    - Fast shipping in EU

    Disadvantages:

    - Very poor instruction support from the shop. We had to ask them for the configuration software and find out by ourselves how to configure it there. I understand if seller for some reason doesn't want to share the configuration software for non-costumers. But I think it must be send to the buyer with at least short config instruction.

    - You need to solder if you want to switch configuration mode or USB/Serial link. Jumpers could be more convenient. Might be an advantage for some people.

    - LoRa modulation doesn't work properly so far (performance is not enough to establish connection with GCS). So we used it in FSK mode.

    - No RSSI or we didn't manage to find it.

Also I would advice CSGshop to put more contacts or information about them on their website. At some point I though you were frauds due to the lack of information about your shop.

  • Does this use the same firmware as the 3DR radios? And again, is it required to buy two for one copter?

  • Nice looking product, good size.

I have done a fair bit of real world LoRa testing to see how it performs in practice, you learn so much more that way. My main interest has been using LoRa for tracking and for this 1000bps is adequate.

With good line of sight between transmitter and receiver, such as between hilltops, circa 1000bps will cover 40km at 3dBm output power using simple ¼ wave wires. Using the full 100mW output should therefore cover around 300km at that data rate.

However the bandwidth used has a major effect on performance, and although you quote the data rate, I cannot see what what LoRa bandwidth your modem uses, can you elaborate ?

  • 915MHz version avail now!

  • Where is the 915MHz version, and do I need two?

  • T3

    Hi CSG, hi all,

    Interesting product!

Can someone provide some info on ETSI/CE compliance and restrictions?

It seems that in Europe only the 868 MHz version is ETSI compliant. If I understand correctly, there is either a restricted duty cycle or Adaptive Frequency Agility (AFA) and Listen Before Talk (LBT).
For UAV telemetry operating with 1 or 10% duty cycle is not reasonable. So AFA+LBT is required.

@CSG what is implemented in your 868 MHz modules - Duty cycle or LBT + AFA?

Another thing regarding 433/868 MHz. As far as I know the common 433 SiK modules are not allowed because the user can change the power by himself via the firmware. Does this apply to the 868 MHz as well?

    Thanks and best regards,
    Thorsten

  • I think it shouldn't be a problem inside EU - that's where CSG is located.

  • We can make also AES encryption but can be problem with shipping.

  • One thing I don't understand is that why so few radios have encryption. It's not hard to do, but it's an important feature for anyone doing commercial work with UAVs.

  • I've made it 73km with a simple dipole antenna attached to RF1276 (SX1276), and would have gone more, if I were higher, as I've reached a horizon limit. -148dB RX sensitivity. Not willing to promote anything, but 168dB link margin is quite something, especially when TX/RX pair costs $45. I'd say its a best LoRa stuff in a market today.

Truth, going at such a low bitrates requires modified telemetry protocols, messages as short as possible, sentences rotated. Native APM telemetry won't work.
