So just a delay on follow me mode. Like generating a FIFO buffer with the GCS tablet position?

That wouldn't be very hard to implement, and the copter should try to follow the path you just took with a small delay.

  • To clarify, what i should have said was 'one could even walk the course, without clicking channel 7 at every deviation from a straight line.'

  • Yes thanks Hughes, I've been using that for a long time now.

What i want to see is an upgrade, where a new path can be set with the tablet on each run, it would still be a live follow, but along the course, rather than cutting corners. I hasten to add I'd like both modes of follow me, I'm not suggesting this as a replacement.

@Dave. This functionality exists already: configure ch7 as "save waypoint" and assign it to a switch of your radio. Then take your apm and tablet or laptop with mission planner and activate the switch of your radio each time you want a new waypoint. And Voila !
  • Arthur, good question, I'm full of ideas, and little else!

Would it be possible for a new follow me mode to be introduced, called 'follow this track' or something where the ground station logs a waypoint every second or so, and the quad moves along those waypoints in order, therefore following the track left by the GCS rather than only striving to get directly to the current position.

This way one could even walk the course that you want the quad to repeat, and upload the resulting waypoints as a mission.

  • Very cool.  What kind of position error do you get with the Nexus 7?  I find the GPS is often off by quite a few meters compared to my UBlox 6.

@Dave C: How would you implement it, in ArduPilot/MAVlink language?

  • Randy,

Kevin Hester mentioned that he is planning on increasing the update rate to somewhere around 4Hz.

  • Yup that's my experience too, plus if you manage to get away from it (I tried on my bike) it will take the shortest route to you rather than following your exact route. I'm sure a route following mode would be possible.

Randy is right it keeps updating your position so it won't follow the exact course you take, if you stop it just loiters above you, been playing with this for a couple of weeks :-)
