  • Of course, one could (using up a bit of payload weight) simply strap a USB 4G modem, a USB travel router with 100Mbit ethernet, and any one of hundreds of embedded ARM boards with ethernet on them. Payload weight? Probably about one kilogram at this stage, including short runs of cables. Everything runs on +5VDC. With the embedded ARM board, get yourself one with a USB slave port (so this leaves out the useless RaspberryPi) so you can connect to a PhoneDrone through Linux-ADK drivers - if there is interest, I'll fish the link out of my bookmarks. Also with the embedded board, you can simply connect thermal cameras (I know of one on Kickstarter that uses Bluetooth and a thermopile array) and other odds and ends, streaming the data back to the ground, and even allowing the ground station to also be portable, on the 4G network.

  • FLIR Cobalt 90 is what I am saving my money for.  Just 30K more to go.
  • here seems to be a module for US band 17. It has USB and drivers for Linux and Windows.

  • LTE is coming soon. Looking the tests in the first test networks, I would think it has great potential for this kind of embedded video + control applications and the price would not be worse than 3G currently.
  • This system will need a license due to the frequencies it uses.  It says that the video format is mpeg2 and PAL and NTSC.  Is the video digital or Analog ?  If digital, why not out put to TMDS (DVI and HDMI) ?

    The problem is that the COFDM chip is only made by one or two companies and they're charging an arm and a leg. Hopefully increased volume of sales will reduces costs.
  • Developer
    I suspect most of the price if for the COFDM radio system. That is really a specialty item that you find in professional broadcast equipment. At this price range I would begin to expect features like sending telemetry data and a Ethernet link built in. The 8mbit digital link would be useful for more then just transferring video.
