  • Well the hell do you get these ideas from?

You can buy an a.c. recharge kit in Wal-Mart.

And you obviously don't realize just how little 350grams is and no it won't hurt anybody.

And no it's not part of the NAS. That's the whole point.

  • So move there. I think you'd like Switzerland. None of these damn oppressive agencies. Heck you can keep a gun in your house. In fact you have to I think.

Oh and the AC? You need a license because they want to make sure you can recapture the refrigerant when you work on it. You're not even supposed to work on your own AC.

I don't know where you got the feeling that I blindly accept anything. I happen to agree with most of what they are doing. With my eyes open. Not blindly. And to change the things I don't agree with we need to prove we are responsible and reasonable. Not a bunch of cowboys or pirates that will do as we please because we think we are smarter or know better or just because we want to.

  • And re: commercial - if the FAA can demonstrate - with independent evidence - that commercial flights are inherently unsafe, ill accept it. Until then look at other authorities who know that safety is not linked to whether a flight is commercial or not. Eg: UK's FAA, Switzerland's FOCA.
  • Nobody accused you of being closed minded. But blindly accepting punative laws because "theyre the government - they know best", is wrong. Especially given the FAA's recent performance.

Would you let me change the brakes on your car, if it was pretty obvious i was making it up as i went along? At the same time, would you mind if i charged you $200 to service your AC, because *I* deemed it unsafe?
  • Euan,

You got me. How could I have been so closed minded? Damn the FAA. I'm going flying. I don't like the law so I am going to disregard it. I think I will speed on the way to the field. That'll teach 'em.

You know the answer to all your questions. You just don't like them. There ARE safety issues, you just choose to ignore them which is exactly why the FAA needs to step in. We should be thankful congress told the FAA to leave our hobby alone.

If you want to make money doing this you have a higher responsibility. If you want to do a little carpentry work at your house, for the most part you can, but if you want to make money doing the same thing at your neighbors, you need a license and a permit. If you want to screw your house up OK but if your neighbor is paying you there is a higher standard. Our government protects us from substandard workers. It is called licensing. When your 350 gm quad 'flies away' and hits someone's child or pet tell me there are no safety issues.

You make lots of leaps like "I'm quite sure the concept of commercial has mutated from its original intent." I am not sure what you mean, but probably you disagree with the FAA calls commercial. They do that because of people who think they can skirt the rules with technicalities like 'I don't get paid' they just donate. You seem to think the FAA is in charge of transportation. They are charged with safety in the NAS National Air Space.

  • Dr. Marty, I'm quite sure the concept of commercial has mutated from its original intent. While originally it was applicable when all aircraft carried people, it's completely mis applied when there are no safety issues what so ever.

For example I can fly a 350 gram quad at tree top level or lower and film real estate for money all day long.  How is this even remotely the concern of a government entity in charge of "transportation?  I can't even think of a parable for this over reach.hmmm.... The fcc examining textbooks for correct spelling might be an amply absurd scenario.

  • @dr marty "uh Jamie". I don't need your condescending tone. The FAA does not regulate commerce.

The FAA is dragging their feet because they are a bureaucratic behemoth. Simple common sense rules. Based on their recommendations for hobbyists could be put in place the small lightweight drones like the Phantom for instance. Even on an interim basis. They can't see the forest for the trees. Yes will all know that the larger implications of UAS is a huge game changer. But this can easily be taken step by step without delays.

They are too bust play cop on the beat to publish some simple regulations to let small entrepreneurs begin to develop the business models needed for commercialization. They should be helping small business not hindering.

  • "Nothing is more destructive of respect for the government and the law of the land than passing laws which cannot be enforced."
"An individual who breaks a law that conscience tells him is unjust, and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for the law."
