First glimpse of GoPro Karma

3689699752?profile=originalFrom the Verge:

GoPro might have accidentally given us a sneak peak of its Karma drone. The company announced earlier this week that it would be unveiling the anticipated aircraft for the first time later this month. A since-removed preview on several of the company’s European websites contain a thumbnail of what appears to be the anticipated aircraft.

GoPro will be holding an event on September 19th to show off the drone (and potentially its Hero5 camera). The image on its French, Italian, Spanish and German websites show off a black and white quadcopter, which links right to the company’s Karma page.

The site also showed off a previously unannounced stabilizer, which led directly to a 404 page.

  • I Just noticed that the upcoming GoPro Hero Black 5 seems to have exactly the same (at least preliminary) specs as the current Yi 4K which costs $250.00 and already has Touch screen, image stabilization, the newest Sony sensor and the latest Ambarella A9SE75 processor.

The Yi also has selectable 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi

which could be a real benefit to those wanting to use the WiFi with a 2.4GHz radio.

At least worth taking a closer look at the Yi:

  • Agreed completely.  How hard would it have been to simply offer a variant of the GoPro with an appropriate lens for AP?  I mean, they already owned this market.  There are 100 gimbals made specifically for their camera.  The whole thing has been mana from heaven for them.  They didn't put ANY effort into this end of the market, but they owned it anyway.  And they couldn't even offer a different lens for us.

Why would we have any reason to think that suddenly they will "get it"?

My prediction is that this new drone will still use a standard surfer's lens.

  • @LD. My prediction is that Karma will be an immediate, spectacular flop. I doubt they will even make DJI lower its prices (unlike the perceived threat of Solo). GoPro are not innovative enough. They had a chance to supply the UAVmarket with gimbals and cameras, or even a gimbal-friendly, RC controllable camera with an appropriate lens. They did not bother. Now that they have run out of surfers they come up with a drone. Too little and too late.

  • @LD, I think you should prepare to be disappointed.  We'll see.  We don't think they are using Ardupilot, so the flight performance most certainly will not be world-class.

  • I'll be really disappointed if a company with the financial and human capital of GoPro can't produce an absolutely world class drone which raises the bar for the entire industry. We'll find out soon enough.

@ben: You mean the Sony R10C for Solo SiteScan? It's out now!

  • Wasn't there supposed to be a new Sony interchangeable (QX1 update) lens camera due about now?

  • Early news suggests the new Hero 5 Black will have a built in waterproof case, slightly larger battery, touchscreen and image stabilization but not much else new and operational specs will stay the same,

And that low cost direct Chinese competition Yi for instance has already eroded considerably both the low and now the high end GoPro market.

And given the huge number of consumer and pro grade photo/video quadcopters available at every price point it is hard to consider GoPro's latecomer as a game changer unless it does something really unique.

GoPro had the market at one time, but doesn't really seem to have innovated enough to stay there.

  • The million dollar question is will the Hero5 work with Solo, @Chris Anderson?
