German Multicopter Lifts Human Pilot

Love the yoga ball as a soft landing device, can't believe the pilot trusted his life to an RC controller though and he never had covers for all those props which would have sliced him up like a blender if things went pear shaped.

Awesome stuff, just totally jealous as we are trying something similar and they flew first :-)

  • Also, I'm surprised it appears they used NO Carbonfiber(?) in the frame (at least the props).

  • I could be fascinated with the possibility of death.

I'm no sure if I would say Ohh Wow towards the end.

  • Looks like standard off the shelf flight controller, though 12 motors appears to be the max I've seen out of all the flight controllers out there (theoretically, most support upto 32). I'd be interested in what ESC's he used, cause the control latency at those lengths would be a factor. Unless he's using the 12 outer motors at constant rpms for basic lift and the 4 inner motors for control--that would solve a lot of ESC control issues. Otherwise, I'm sure he balanced *everything*. As for vibrations, the *human* is the vibration damper!

I like the way he mounted the motors (brackets with counter sunk screws)--can I say shears-ville? Scary.

Anyway, no guts no glory. It can be done. But if you don't have propeller guards--all you need is a simple prop snap--and it will slice right though you.

  • Yes a flying blender, thats what it is..very dangerous but FUN!

  • Wish the video showed something besides black.  Like the iPad, not technically challenging, but someone actually had to put the pieces together & do it.  Now that someone has finally flown a manned electric helicopter, hopefully it'll stimulate more progress in less educated countries.

  • The video depicts a great sport challenge similar to snow jumping. I like what can be preventable by known safety measures.

Balloons, helmets reminds me of this. Now is this more or less dangerous than the multi flight?

  • I would do this with a kevlar suit along with the helmet and a polycarbonate face shield, but I weigh too much :-(

The balloon reminds me of my childhood days jumping around the living room. They lifted the propeller frames above the ground for a good reason.  Neat.

The dilemma is that if the pioneers of the early airplanes and helicopters and cars and so on had todays modern view on safety, they would get nowhere. If you look at old footage from early days and the golden age of airplanes they where all raving lunatics with a death wish by todays standards.

  • Hold mackerel!
