GoPro Wire Rope Mount with Furniture Coasters

I built this Wire Rope GoPro mount out of a couple of Furniture leg coasters, a Bicycle Brake cable and some electrical brass wire connectors removed from their plastic housing. Test flown this morning and here is the result.

I'm very pleased with the video as I have tried many ways to remove the rolling shutter effect previously and this is by far the most effective. The video is shot on a GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition @1080p 60fps. I have also briefly tested it on my old GoPro Hero 1 @1080p 30fps and got similar results.

I'm flying the wire mount on a Reptile 500 quad Frame from Himodel.com and its on the APM2.5 stock 2.91 quad firmware.

I decided to get a ready made 2 axis gimbal.

  • Here's the video after applying Deshaker V3 filter on it to remove the jitters.

  • Heh heh, I was thinking about how to adapt this wire suspension mount into a 2 axis gimbal myself! I have some ideas floating in my head at the moment. Will definitely let you know once I come out with it. BTW, your personal blog is pretty cool! You have very interesting projects going on.

  • Hi Weelian, we must surf the same sites and blogs :-) i am now trying to get this type of vibration isolation but on a 2 axis gimble, if you have any ideas let me know.. :-)

  • Hi Yusuf! Yes I got inspired by your blog post and it is directly inspired by your design, though I had to modify mine a bit; I'm the one who left you a comment on your blog post. Yep I have seen many variations of the wire rope suspension mount, including the PVC pipe cap versions which is very similar. No doubt this mount is the best for eliminating rolling shutter on the GoPro period!

  • Hi, i am glad you got the result you wanted, and i hope the insperation came from my design i posted here: http://www.flitetest.com/articles/gopro-vibration-eliminator it works really well, and i cannot take credit for it either, but it is good to share.

  • Thanks Magnus and no problem, good to share great ideas! Yes, I'm very familiar with David's work and my first Tricopters are based on his design, I built my second Tricopter using his CNC frames : ). David's setup would be excellent for Tricopters as the battery will add more mass to the camera mount isolating the vibrations further.

  • Good job!

I don't mean to rain on your parade, but here is another similar design, from Swedish FPV-Guru David Windeståhl:

I also built something similar but with 3mm steel cables, which also hold my 5Ah batteries for added mass together with the camera and gimbal. Later this spring I hope to show the results.

  • Thanks for all your comments guys! To say I'm very pleased is an understatement. I have spent a lot of time, effort and money to eliminate the jello in the past and I can confidently say that this is the BEST solution for getting rid of Jello.

Yes Brian and Adam, you are right, I'm already thinking of mounting the landing gear to create a stand off for my Go Pro when I mount it upside down. Since I have so many parts left, I can build another mount for my Tricopter and Tcopter.

  • Nice, trying to think of a way to reverse that to mount on the bottom. Great idea. Thanks for sharing.
