In search of design functionality!

   I wanted to share something i was working on for some time and get some feedback on the design.

I was looking how to make a frame for fpv with focus to ease of use and functionality, after quite some thinkering i've got to this point shown in renders, this is just a working model renders, incomplete but the core idea is there.

  Considering it is a mini frame design, it shows small fc, but the synergy yielded by bottom(power system train) and top(control and vision feed bridge) enables mounting of all sort of fully featured flight controllers as APM in between segments while remaining protected and easy to access.

  Canopy is implement for incrised aerodynamics, keeping air moisture away from electronics and wiring in FF, make it easier to train LOS flying, help a spotter in fpv assemble maintain visual and ofc while flying with your mates maintain visual on eachother much easier.

   For its size, the frame construction has amazing fitting capacity, it can take apm with gps, radio reciever and video transciever, camera, osd, bec, 4x 20A afro slims(overpowerd but wise for hot summers and weight allows it), telemetry and stunning battery compartment 12cmx4cm x 2,7cm. Central frame construction bounding box is only 20cm long, 5cm wide and 8cm height!  Nearly everything is "armor tanked" by construction, figures as inspiration for me was the armadillo animal hehe.

  However antennas placement is in revision, altho giving almoste perfect LOS to GCS in model 360degree placing screeming video transciever antenna next to radio reciever is a big fail, for a mini sure no problem but it can be done better. 

   So let me know what you guyz think about the design, thoughts, suggestions?

    The motor mount idea just poped out of my head one day, it simply felt practical and efficient solution, now that i hear you made the same thing with good resaults makes me more confident its the right solution.

    I belive the best thing about multirotors is the fact that the people make it more and more advanced as time passes, community as whole has the power not big companys. Just look at APM or other projects, big business brands stand no chance nor they can controll the progress, look at Alex brushless gimble kicking DJI in the but or APM ap features, simply amazing :) Same goes for frame or mechanic solutions in generaly, exciting times to live in for sure!

    When i finish the design refinament and prototyping i will either find manufacturer to produce it for fair price or i will  release design blueprint files to public. I think ppl deserve more for their hard earn money, i just hope if i give it to everyone to manufacture ppl will not blaim the design if the quality of their manufacturing or material is of lower grade. There are some that tend to do that, blaim the design, not everyone tho hehe

    We had tried the same type of motor mount with an insert inside the tube, it has been a very good solution to implement.

    Hi guyz, sorry for late replay, had to go to work. I will try to explain a bit in detail.

    Evan-cs 3D printing is amazing technology available today, but it doesn't suits this design.

    Spencer Tryba I use Autodesk Inventor CAD software. You are apsolutly right, another clamp to fix motor arm would make it stronger but it is not necessery, this is mini size frame with 285mm motor to motor distance with total RTF weight of 520 grams tops. CFK booms are 16mm radius, and the area coverd by chasis boom holder is 18mm in lenght. Plenty! even 9mm would do the job but that would make a high stress point on bottom chasis, but you gaved a good point none the less!

     

    Oliver  This is mini sized frame of total 520grams max rtf weight and 285mm m2m, usually ppl use 5x3 propellers with tigerMn1806/SS 2000-2300kv motors, this design however supports 6inch props, best efficiency would be achived with tiger MN1806 2300kv with tiger 6x2 propeller.

    Short example  at 100% throttle 5x3 on mn1860 pulls 9.6A giving aprox 400grams of thrust, same motor with 6x2propeller at 85% throttle at 9.4A gives over 486grams of thrust. basicly you achive almoste 4:1 power to weigth ratio, that is highly efficient power system.

    this design is all about using exactly amount of material/weight needed, and make it as rigid as possible if weight cost is justified.

    About canopy, in renders it is merly of representative purpouse, i find it a bit silly to go and design cool canopy while frame is not solved and final.I plan to design canopy that is well actually canopy is part of frame not something you have to put on frame or take of, once you tune everything then you screw down the canopy(deflector), its tight mount, further more one those vtx and rx cage bars you use shirnk warp wich keeps canopy from oscilating if there is some harmonics, not entirely tho but thats a good thing, you will actually be able to here carbon fiber having some harmonics, like you do on helicopters when something causes oscilations.

     

    FroJoBMX The ring you mentiond is the chasis boom holder i presume, it covers  area of 18mm in lenght over boom, it is more than sufficient. truth is addition "plate" support is must, exactly above the boom mounts.

    Further more, that chasis boom clamp has a pin that goes inside the boom whole at the root, rotation is not possible, on the motor mount side, that problem is solved by 2 screws connecting the inner and outer clamp.

     

    Gary McCray You are correct, Tiger motor company really knows their stuff, they have made cfk propeller series that use bigger inch lower pitch, this provides huge boost in multirotor response time, stability and wind handling. Unlike other mini frames this is design for 6x2 inch propeller for max efficiency.

    As mentioned above, i am using clamp system for motor mounts, but not the type everyone uses, this is a task of mounting 18gram motor on 16mm cfk tube at 1mm thickness, an easy task allowing me to apply moste effective way to do it, literaly fusing clamp round surface with boom round surface with innner and outter clamp with significant hardware reduction and screw lenght and complete motor mount assembly of light weight making 16mm tube more than viable solution for mini.

    Now it is possible to use 20amp afro slims enabling mn1806 hit 100% at 11.2amps providing 535grams of thrust during summer tempertures leaving cool power system, also serve as landing bumpers and giving amazing motor to ground clearance wich helps keeping your motors safe.

    Top chasis area will be reduced, becouse atm these renders are of model assembly precisly made to be place where i clash my thoughts and question my solutions, it is not a precise engineered assembly, it would be waste of time at this stage, once i solve the final bits of the design puzzle then its time for precision. When you know all the answer then its just about prototyping with possibly only 2 revisions.

     

     

    Huh, well i hope that covers current Q&A, there is so much details about the design so i hope i managed to sum it down a bit, its borring stuff i know :)

    An interesting design, and I like the central fuselage concept.

    But a few thoughts, Oliver is right above, you might want to make the arms a bit longer to accommodate bigger props.

    The reality is the bigger the prop the higher the efficiency.

    Also the arm tubes are way bigger than they need to be for strength or rigidity and any excess in size here simply acts as a reduction in thrust because of the air resistance to the propwash.

    You would possibly be better off with a clamp type motor mount, because glues are not known for working terribly well with carbon fiber and because drilling the tube weakens it quite a bit.

    The top chassis (carbon fiber "roll bar") looks like it is larger than it needs to be with unnecessary and non-beneficial intermediate clearance resulting in a larger side profile than necessary and therefore more undesirable resistance to gusts and wind than is required.

  • The frame to motor mounts are not stable. You have one ring around the booms, but two with a gap would help to reduce applied moment stresses and reduce oscillations a great deal. Also if the booms take a directly axial hit, they will slide into the LiPo.

    Under heavy wind loading, the receiver antennas may droop into the rotors.

    Else the implementation is elegant & robust.

  • Hard to tell with nothing but oblique views but it looks like prop size is limited by motor-to-body distance rather than by motor-to-motor. Impression is that the arms are very short. Also wonder if there will be lift generated in fast forward flight by the canopy.
