Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) are increasing in number and effectiveness as aircraft, sensors and related technologies mature. "However, public opinion regarding these unmanned systems often begins in the imagination, and may harden into myth through misconception, popular culture and an inability to imagine the non-military benefits of a platform that has traditionally been used for national defense.

The potential benefits of UAS go well beyond military use – to a variety of domestic applications that can improve the safety of our communities, strengthen public services and achieve countless additional benefits to a wide variety of commercial and government organizations.

Until public discussion moves beyond misnomers and false assumptions about unmanned systems, it will be difficult to advance substantive policy changes that enable growth of this highly beneficial technology. Starting the conversation begins with understanding the technology behind UAS and acknowledging that the potential benefits of UAS go well beyond military use.

  • you see I have to disagree with the whole premise of this infograph.

the problem isn't the average person seeing beyond the military use of drone that's just a nice way to dismiss these people. even the most uninformed people you will talk to will completely understand and are okay with using drones for search and rescue, fire spotting and the other examples on the graph because they aren't afraid of those uses. these are small numbers of people in fields that are highly trained and the equipment they use and how they use it is regulated.

what most people don't like about drones is the idea of everyone and their cousin bob having one and flying them were ever and when ever they want and that's completely understandable.

the truth is a lot of the promise around drones is flying car/ jet pack level hype. very few people will ever truly have a need to own a UAV but so many people in the field and even on this site act like everyone will OWN SIX!!!  and have at least one on them at ever second of the day.
