Since we got into the Made-For-iPod program we've been kicking around the idea of making a drone-compatible device. When Claudio Natoli posted his proof-of-concept iOS app, the project moved into high gear.

With the jump start on the software we were able to focus on hardware and mechanical design, allowing us to go from concept to Crowdfunding prototype in two and a half months.

As one of the DIY Drones members involved in this project, I'd like to comment briefly on the Android vs Apple thing.
Yes, putting something together as an Android hacker/maker is clearly an easier path. And that's kind of the point - there's a good portion of this community who own iDevices, and would like to have the connectivity and drone control options more readily available to those in the Android world. This project is for them.
And if you're one of those members, we'd love to hear your thoughts and get you involved!
From my perspective, the interesting story here is how another group of disparate individuals across the planet have been able to connect, thanks entirely to this DIY Drones community platform, and pooled their skills to create something that (hopefully!) fills a need for a portion (but clearly not all! :-) of the other members of the DIY Drones community.

To me, this is just another reason to use Android gear so you can use Andropilot...
It's handy to be able to take a spare batter for your Android phone for those long days flying... You have to feel a bit sorry of those stuck with apple products and batteries that can't be removed, killing flexibility and setting a short life expectancy on the device as battery life decreases over time...
An Android version would have been less painful to build...sounds like a good chunk of their work is for Apple approval of their dongle :-)

Congratulations..great idea, but what about Android platform? isn't it there a larger nº of users ?
I don't have any Apple products, so this is not for me, but just wanted to say I like the hardware design. It appears that you've designed it to help stabilize the plug connection and prevent damage to the socket and plug? Great idea.
That's one of the pet peeves of using an OTG dongle in my tablet, you're walking around with this really flimsy thing sticking out. Just waiting to get torqued off somehow.
