Meet the Developers: Michael Oborne

3689420181?profile=originalToday's installment in the Meet the Developers series is Michael Oborne, creator of the awesome Mission Planner. If my memory serves (it's been a couple years), Michael first got involved when he wrote a Xplane interface utility for the original ArduPilot so it could do a hardware-in-the-loop simulation. Today, an echo of that original utility, now vastly improved and enhanced, is the Simulation tab in the Mission Planner.

Michael's superpower is the ability to add any feature or fix any bug overnight. It's really quite amazing. I send him an email with a suggested feature or change before I go to bed in California, and when I wake up the next morning, there a new version of the Mission Planner with that implemented! Plus all the features he's adding anyway.... He may sleep, but we've seen no evidence of it ;-)

Credit also to his partner, Samantha Nelson, who did the lovely redesign of the Mission Planner. You'll be seeing more of that green and gray/white design in some future DIY Drones sites.

Over to him!

  • Michael...I looked in the directory (and subs) that contains the ArdupilotMegaPlanner10.exe for  Mission Planner 1.2.29, in the .zip download file for the same, and did a complete system-wide search for a file named changelog.txt. The only one I found was for the 3DRadio configurator. I can't find a 1.2.30 download, so I must need to re-update 1.2.29. There does not seem to be an option in the Mission Planner to do this, so should I uninstall/reinstall it 1.2.29?

  • Developer

Jeff. with the latest build there is a changelog.txt in the install directory. you may need to do an update to get the file however

  • I cannot seem to locate the release notes/change log/what's new/... etc. for the (frequently updated) Mission Planner, i.e. 1.2.27, 1.2.28, and most recently 1.2.29. Specifically, I am trying to find out what incremental changes/fixes have occurred within each release. If such a document exists, I would greatly appreciate a link to it. BTY, it's an awesome piece of work!

  • Mission planner is why I own APMx's

Thank you for your hard work

  • Michael, thanks for your work. Mission Planner led me to see my world with other eyes.

    Well done!

  • Hi Michael.

I don't know if you are willing to see some suggestions and code changes to Mission Planner but I already did some changes locally and I think those changes are good to be put in original repository. However, I'm struggling to setup Git properly to show those changes. If you will be so kind to have a look at this thread.

    Thanks in adv.

  • Michael, thanks for your work.

    One word: Awesome!!!

  • Dear Mike,

The Telemetry I ordered was the XBee Series 2 kit. Does APM1 board work with this?

Also, I live in Great Britain where the 900MHz ordinarily should be the standard. So far, I've been unable to establish a connection to the autopilot via the XbeeS2 device using the mission planner. What do you say?

  • Michael thanks for your great work on the planner.

I’m missing an important feature: at the HUD, in the “Actions” tab, there is a “Do Action” button; can you add the ability to trigger the outputs like AUX channels, shutter etc’?

I connect a servo to ch’ 7 to be triggered from the APM at WP, I like to test it on the ground using the “Do Action”, can it be done?

  • Hello Michael, just an info. Since the 1.1.49 version of the end of january, your software don't want update, but curiously the firmwares yes! But i had many bugs with Mavlink and the screen heli setup was inactive...

I've downloaded today your last and full version 1.1.73 in a new repertory and all is ok now.

I don"t know why, but this info will be may be useful to someone..

Thank you very much for your fantastic work!!
