I'm sitting on the press release and videos until 17 PST it looks quite cool. The event starts at 1630 and Veronica from our SFC office will be there tweeting and filming.

  • So, its basically a copter that can auto retract it's landing gear at 5 meters...But its landing gear is also it's motor arms.
I'm pretty sure DJI S800, 900, 1000 also auto retract legs, and also there is an Arduino IDE port of Ardupilot that supports auto retract:https://github.com/timotto/ardupilot/tree/landinggear

I am greatly looking forward to seeing the DJI inspire release today. What I am looking forward to for my own copter is a $10 landing gear modification using Arducopter for cost & function purposes.

Will the official Ardupilot software incorporate the function in the link above, once it's been tested satisfactorily?

    Thanks

APM Copter modified to support automatic landing gear. The branch 'landinggear' tries to keep track of upstream/master and I backport my modi…
  • That video of the inspire1 is already gone. Someone got in trouble.

  • That sounds more feasible Dom.

Talking of packaged FC's. One of my Phantoms now has a Pixhawk and is flying really nice on 3.2.

From what I see so far the Insight does have a few surprises. The first one that caught my eye however was why did they stay with that awful fisheye lens. It just means more work in post to get rid of it. Been using a couple of Phantom 2+ for a while now and they both had better motors installed and use the three bladed eflight props which was a major improvement Also changed the lenses to 6mm.

  • So going by the leaked video it looks like it's a traditional cf tube quad except the retractable landing gear has been kind of inverted - the body moves instead of the legs so to speak, in order to lift the camera up for landing and down for taking footage.  Looks very compact.  Really nice, lovely looking design - I like the iRobot-like look.  Shame it will almost certainly only come as a package with their FC so few here will be interested, but it definitely gives fresh ideas to the industry.

correction Denny, the V2 Phantoms (Phantom 2 and Phantom 2 Vision + latest revision)

has better motors (more efficient and higher quality)

better compass (or at least the enclosure)

improved radio with trainer port and relocated camera pitch control (and better quality)

and also more aggressive propellers and stiffer.

As for the DJI Transformer Insignt-1 stay tuned for some nice surprises. Sure there will be things we would have done differently, things not dialed in to perfection but I believe in pushing boundaries and this model will do that.

DJI is taking risks and this is good for the evolution of the hobby and overall technology.

  • I think I see what is going on here.  The motors probably run at constant speed and in the same direction. The the lift value changes as the vee is changed i.e. the greater the angle the less vertical component. The yaw is directed by the fore and aft opposite tilt rotations. The bank would have to come from a lower C o G below the frame so that both arms could move in the same direction. A kind of electronic pendulum.

    Just a wild guess.....
