Academy Of Model Aeronautics Warns About Heavy Restrictions Coming From Washington

Academy-Model-Aeronautics-Logo-0211a_tn.jpg The Academy of Model Aeronautics tells ANN that the FAA is set to place "heavy restrictions" on the hobbyists who fly model aircraft. In a circular sent to ANN over the weekend, the AMA indicates that the agency is poised to impose severe restrictions on the model aviation hobby, sport and industry that will have a potentially devastating impact on a recreational and educational activity pursued by hundreds of thousands of enthusiasts, tens of thousands of employees and an industry that generates more than $1 billion in revenue.

  • I agree with your concerns about the AMA.

    What would be worse than the FAA making regulations? A bunch of non-Govt, uncontrolled amateurs making up their own laws and making $100M/year from it. I trust the AMA leadership as far as I can throw a 747.

  • where in spain are you?  In valencia we have competitions to see who can fly the highest !!  WAAY above 400 ft lol

    In my opinion there is nothing in  those "rule examples" that are excessively onerous. You can still go out and have plenty of fun flying within the proposed limits. My concern is that the AMA becomes the governing authority for all model flight in the US. This could be particularly bad for autopilot hobbyists with the AMA current attitude towards their use.
  • 400' altitude has been the polite request of the FAA for 30 years per AC 91-57.

    I said that if everyone ignores AC 91-57 it will eventually end up being mandatory. Guess what might happen.?
