PX34-A refit (update 2)

OK Got the New Armin style wing on.

Compare to the Original EPS wing core thats 80g the Armin style wing is 130g , its 50g heavier for a wing of equivalent

but the results is better stiffer than the EPS wing core resulting in more Responsive Flying and stability . even on moderate winds.

First flight with the new wing.

Note: done 1 day before the Storm and the winds are picking up. .

  • ...and noone gets hit by the debris... had that happen a long while back....

  • will have to replace my ESC for that , this one im using doesn't have brakes . will also upgrade my Radio and FPV unit too in the future. my range is till too short to do full flyouts. i enjoy more with other aircraft in the area . that makes FPV fun. well till someone have a midair collision. as long it wasn't involving a manned aircraft.

  • Cool, how you film all the other air traffic there, awesome! :) Surely, you do a live transmission (sorry if I missed it in the main text of the posting, but I have envisioned this for a while, use the live-chat function of a smart phone to get a stream from the airplane to another smartphone... I wish I had more time)? Also, if you want the prop to stop feathering, you could use a folding prop and then your speed controller needs an electromagnetic brake.

  • why not ? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFHcueHlGWI&list=UUr8HxcdLWVlo-...

I had a good flight on this setup. all I need is a landing gear since I always flip on the landing. LOL

on the last haft of the video I glided it. the problem is the prop still feathers

  • Thanks CliffN!! Good stuff!

  • I do not know who coin the term Armin wing but I do know its a construction technique involving foamboard and packaging tape. its definitely not the lightest material to build from but since foamboard is widely available and affordable most people use this technique to build their wings.

flight time 8-10 min on a 3s 500mah  , about the same capacity of a small multirotor carrying the same payload.endurance isnt a concern since this aircraft is intended for flyby shooting .  get up there take a few photos/video then comeback down. and heaving smaller packs is ideal for quick charging times.

thanks for the advice matt. will use that for longer endurance platforms

for longer endurance this would be taken up by my flying wings.

  • The weather vane effect is probably not very strong since the "attachments" are very close to the neutral point (or should be, at least). I was more worried about drag, which is (or should be) a key factor for a drone since endurance is usually a main design factor.

On a different note, can anyone explain what an "Armin wing" is? Thanks.

  • thanks guys for the feedback , Unfortunately the plane is too small for an internal camera(for the one im using., the GOPRO). that leads to an open frame design.

the plane does have a weathervaneing effect  due to the size of the stabilizers.

will keep the current wing for now. till I get the full EPP foam core. airfoil flat bottom type wing.

at first I cant decide between the KF wing or the Armin wing but the differences  is having a solid spar seems to finalize the decision. since the armin wing is all foam in the interior. in sacrifice of a little weight.

  • Hello,

as a suggestion not only for this model but in general, it is possible to not have the camera exposed in the wind, but rather put it into the fuselage and have it "look" through a mirror, see the attached picture (all hail my drawing skillz!). The results are generally very good (provided that the mirror is good quality and clean), and it allows for view rotation and tilting. Important: keep the camera lens close to the mirror, otherwise the mirror will have to be disproportionally large to capture the whole field.3701831390?profile=original

  • Weight is the enemy of things that need to move.

I am not a fan of 'quick build' wings if higher performance is important. Jaron's Intermezzo wing is a very stiff, KF5 type, and his central structure could be modified for a mostly rectangular wing like yours. Again, a redesign would be required and the plane you have flying is better than the one you think about building...usually.

It looks like you had a tip stall at the end of your first video but, a wind gust could do something similar as your were descending for landing.

    Well done!

    Build and fly on!
