Soon availible... Redundancy for autopilots

3689606807?profile=original

The requirements for the operation of unmanned aircrafts for commercial and semi-professional purposes have changed fundamentally in the past years in Europe and worldwide.
The regulations will get even more strictly in the future.
Depending on the application, the weight, the purpose, the situation, the flight area, spectators and some more reasons, SAFETY is becoming increasingly important.
Even if one repeatedly hears times here and there by the aviation authorities that they grant special rights for certain user groups (e.g. film industry, logistic companies…), so it is at the end the insurance, which restricts a project or even makes it impossible.

Please check also a statement from Poms & Associates:

Single point of failure and redundancy became one of the leading keywords for permissions and certifications from authorities and insurances.
Among other parts inside a system, redundancy of the autopilot system is meanwhile mandatory to follow the rules (here in Austria…other States will follow), especially for multicopters. They are very instable in their flight characteristics when it comes to malfunction of the stabilization system.

We therefore developed a redundancy circuit board which is an intelligent and automatic monitoring and controlling bridge between two independent running autopilot systems, a mutual protection in case of malfunction in an autopilot system.
Even if both autopilots fail (power supply, freezing controller…), the forwarding of the control signals for a manual flight of the aircraft or helicopter (not recommended for multicopters) is granted.

This system also offers the possibility to switch manually between two different autopilot systems to test different software and system setups. The data of each autopilot system can be monitored and changed during the flight separately Another benefit of the AP-Manager (this is the name of the upcoming product) is that for the most autopilots only one telemetry module is needed to monitor data of both autopilot systems (except DJI).

Hence the AP-Manager© is the perfect companion to test the most recent updates or new parameter upgrades for your autopilot systems.

Currently, these autopilot systems have been tested successfully:
•    Ardupilots 2.5/ 2.6
•    PX4 Pixhawk
•    DJI NAZA V2
•    MikroKopter Flight Ctrl ME 2.1

Basically there is no reason that other autopilot systems from other manufacturers won’t work. The board has been designed that all ports are compatible with the common used autopilot systems.

My name is Robert Hoermann and I am the managing director of GIZMOtec Ltd. in Austria.
We will start our campaign within the next 10 days to fund the AP-Manager to share this idea and benefits to the large community of unmanned systems and RC models.
We would like to invite you to visit our new website on www.GIZMOtec.eu (sorry, some construction is still in progress) to enter for a newsletter to be one of the first parties to get informed, when the Indiegogo campaign will start.

We also implemented some first FAQ's and a discussion forum.

When starting the Indiegogo campaign we will also provide a “limited early bird” offer.

Thank you for joining us.

With very best regards,

Robert

  • HI Robert,

We are so happy that you are still working on the project. We will wait for the product to be ready. I hope soon.

  • Hello Vaughn,

Ups, I totally missed your mail, I am sorry.

Yes, after nearly 8 month on standby we found some budget to move on and we are just in the last phase for the "new" final beta board. We will follow up soon with details.

    Regards, Robert

  • @Robert are there any further updates on AP-Manager? We're quite interested in the concept.

    Thanks.

  • Hello rc-friends and enthusiasts for unmanned systems,

Thank you again for the overwhelming number of reply's, mails, telephone calls we have had with you and at least for your support on Indiegogo.

Here is a close update to the project:

    Changes in the indiegogo campaign:
Films: We have uploded 5 new films to different subjects to bring you the capabilities of the AP-Manager a little bit closer to you.
It is not the best quality and not my best English but I hope you could understand it. At least it is authentic...:-)

Example setup of a UAV system with the AP-Manager:

Switching between the telemetry of two parallel running autopilots:

Still running telemetry even when AP-Manager is down:

Waypoint upload and changes on two parallel running autopilots:

Add-on to the configuration software for the AP-Manager:
    http://youtu.be/ei8NQ8

    Changes in the configuration software:
Advanced settings: As we have the ability on the AP-Manager to send digital signals trough a receiver down to the transmitter (in our case with a Jeti system)  we implemented an "emergency active" and a "different from active" choice.
We also integrated a failsafe option for all channels just in case one have really a black Friday on his flight with loosing both autopilots and loosing contact to the receiver with his transmitter.

    Tests:
Test-flights:  Some friends are still out for extra testing. They will probably follow up with films in the next weeks. We will keep you informed.

Thank you for your support on Indiegogo: http://igg.me/at/ap-manager/

    With very best regards,

    Robert
  • Thats Awesome.

    Waiting production to test VTOL.

  • Hi, a little update on a former request about using the AP-Manager as a link between two autopilots for a kind of TRANSFORMER-UAV (e.g. quadcopter  --> aircraft and back)

We have to revise our former statement. YES, with the ardupilot family it will work and we are just doing some software changes. Other autopilot systems will be tested to a later date. Always looking forward for your support in Indiegogo http://igg.me/at/ap-manager/ .

Thank you for staying with us.

    Robert

  • Hello Theo,

Thank you for your comments and the way you looking into the world (or at least at us).

Well, I can only say from our point of view that we reacted on the market and on the demands (laws) of some, as you name them “clueless bureaucrats”, wrote on paper.

The idea behind a redundancy for autopilot it is not our invention and therefore we are far away of using a kind of old marketing scheme in making fear. I think the time is only ripe and we are all under influence of a constant development in technology.

And by the way, I would like to excuse my sometimes probably wrong wording because English is not my mother tongue.

I would like to invite you to write to me in perfect German next time. I am sure you can do this much better than me.

@ Alain, thank you for your idea. Sure you could use this on top with the AP Manager for training...

@ Elios, thank you for your answer to this and your view from a commercial side, great.

    Robert

  • HI Alain,

The Dualrxcontroller is very nice and very good for trainers and trainees, and the Ap-Manager is not only great but the only inexpensive solution for Autopilot redundancy, especially for expensive drones and UAVs.

Imagine you have a drone for 2000$ and a Camera for another 1000$ (or gopro with gimbal), and you lose the autopilot, what will happen? The only thing that you will get is the photos from the Sd Card :).

Trust me, we just came from there.

We were searching since 1 year for an automatic redundancy solution and fortunately Gizmotec will make it available for us.

Investing for an additional 300$ for a second autopilot and 200$ for the Ap-Manager only once and keep my drone investment safe, it will be the wisest thing we will ever do.

Forget about 2 Tx Radios, if you have autopilot, but of course if you dont have an autopilot then Ap-Manager is not for you.

    Regards

    Elios

  • Hi there,

@ Elios, like posted I am looking forward to our skype meeting

@ Marco, thank you very much for your feedback. This is also an interesting solution for a redundancy. As far as I understood (sorry I can understand only brackets in Italian) you take a second battery circuit and a second  transmitter and as a last and final backup a parachute in your "emergency-process-flow"

    Best regards, Robert
