I made a strange frame, it's not pretty looks, but it really can fly.

It isn't very stable now. I will keep tuning.

My idea is simple, just need one engine take the air into box, then go out from three gas outlet. Three servo control flow rate to make different force. And need a tail blade to control yaw. It's very like CCPM.

frame: Design by myself
controller/autopilot: APM or MWC
esc: HobbyWing Platinum-60A-PRO
motors: DUALSKY 3548ca-5 850kv
propellers: gws 1045 3-blade
battery: 6S 3600mAh
total weight: about 2000g
radio: Futaba T8FG

This structure can be use all kind of engine, so it probably to build a real practical flying car.

I am not be good at coding, so I just try all kind of FC, try again and again. Now i often use APM and MWC. I want change the code, because this structure can't use the system as same as CCPM, they was liked each other, but not  exactly same. Hope you can help me, give some advice to change code of Heli. Thanks.

If you are interest to the frame, you can found all source file(sketchup) in svn on my code.google.

  • Thanks  ssq870424. 我是江苏的。谢谢您的建议,我去看看。

  • I have flied a singlecopter like Honeywell T-hawk. It flies very well indoor.

    你哪里人?我qq1063603770,硕士就是做单轴飞机,室内飞的很好了。多交流。这个论坛有个比利时人也用apm做过单轴,你可以查下帖子。

  • Thanks Mark Lanning. I know performance of this monster is lower. But safety and VTOL is very important in today. Many city's bad traffic let people enough angry even want kill someone. If make a safety VTOL flying car. I guess  not many guys care for the Fuel consumption is too high.

I don't know how to calculate it. ^_^ In fact i want go to college to learn this(ex: aircraft design) but apply student visa is too difficulty in china. I have failed once. π_π

  • Thanks noth666. My English isn't good, hope I have not misunderstood what you meant.

    Are you mean:

    3692623022?profile=original

I had think about this, but it's too hard to make so i used single propeller in concept model.

And i use 2 blade to against counteract the rotation:

3692622949?profile=originalThe blade can rotate to a angle then fix it by a bolt

3692623056?profile=originalI don't know which one of angle is good, so I make 8 hole(rectangle) for try it.

  • Thanks  Ricardo Affonso. I tried "singlecopter" KK and MWC can easy make it. But the structure of "singlecopter" wasn't fit manned. “Convair XFY” and "Lockheed XFV" were "singlecopter" manned aircraft in about 1950, they were given up because safety wasn't good and the man go into and out cockpit was very difficult. I want made a practical manned aircraft not just a unmanned model.

  • Very Nice!

  • Very cool.

  • look for "singlecopter", made out of depron. more simple, easy to build and less drag. haven't built anything like that, but yours seems too complex.

  • Awesome!

I am guessing the control authority is a bit of an issue due to the servos having to counteract the rotation of the propeller, or is this taken into account specifically somewhere in the design?

I have been wanting to make a somewhat similar setup for a few years now, but I was going to use counter rotating propellers, one CW, the other CCW and use the differential as yaw basically like quads do. I have seen some coaxial brushless motors out there, but for some reason I can't find them now.

I think the design would be better if you did use 2 counter rotating motors simply because you can keep the package as compact as it is now, increase airflow/power and you get yaw control and stability without having to use the servos to direct the thrust vector to counteract it, thus you would get more power/airflow also at the same time.

  • Also it seems like with this design you loose a lot of thrust / performance... do you have the numbers on that?  How much thrust does your prop do without the enclosure and how much are you getting with it (subtracting out the weight of the craft)?  This uses 4 servos for diverting the thrust?
