The "Bravo" Flying Wing has flown

It flies! Earlier today, I stepped outside, walked 80 feet to the 10+ acre field next to my house, and chucked my brand new flying wing. There are few things in the world like flying a plane that you've scratch built. And unlike many of my plane projects in years past, this one actually flew well.I've been working on UAV platforms all summer. Although I can't show my regular research project (If I told ya I'd have to, ah..... NDA ya!), I can show this aircraft, which is being built for the research project and as a typical flying wing UAV platform.

I modeled the entire thing down to the details on Autodesk Inventor 2010. (Well, not every detail, but most.)

If I can get my Ardupilot working well enough, I might tempt a shot at the T3 Contest with this thing.

Mogly: do you have access to any solid-modeling CAD packages? I could send it in .IGES/.igs format, or if you've got Inventor, I could just sent the .ipt/.iam files. As I think of it, if the demand is high enough, I should just publish the plans for this, dxf/dwg or just pdf plans.

The wing is 1.25 meters span, 30-ish decameters area, with a MH45 airfoil for root and tip. Washout is 1.2 degrees, although I wish I had put in more. (25 degree sweep angle for c/4 chord line. 127mm tip and 306mm chord w/o elevons, 180 and 320-ish w/)

As to electronics, I modeled a Turnigy C3530-1400, Phoenix 35, Supreme 8 Receiver, the Ardupilot 2.2 with Shield, EM406 GPS, HS-81 and HS-85MG servos, Range Video 500mW 2.4 Ghz Tx with Antenna, ....the list goes on. Taking a introductory CAD class, even though I claim electrical engineering as my major, has ruined me: I model everything that tempts my curiosity in CAD.

The bays are positioned symmetrically yet strategically to allow for optimal viewing angle for a top-mounted camera, direct links between equipment, enough distance between GPS and A/V Tx, and enough room for any future equipment. I also have designed the base plate to accept a chassis board / module pod, via the blind nut and spar access slots. (Not shown too well, ask for more info if wanted)

  • Sweeet THis looks awesome... this is exactly the same I want to do.

Look at this.... [http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showpost.php?p=12832893&postcoun...], This is cool too...with Launcher.... Do you have mesearments and electronics part details ? Can you share with me ? that would help me a lots for my build... As this is my 1st UAV....

Thanks for the pics.. looks great....

    Beautiful! Great equipment layout, too.
